FastStone Image Viewer will open HEIC and save to many common image formats.

I see that the FastStone web page has an asterisk for both HEIC and WEBP image formats.

        * Note: HEIC and WEBP are supported by Windows Imaging Component (WIC) codecs on Windows 10 / 11

Are there any additional pieces to be downloaded to have FastStone work for HEIC and WEBP image formats?

On a Windows 10 system, I had problems viewing an image in HEIC image format without needing more than what Windows alone was providing. Is FastStone + Windows what I needed?

Forgive me if a dumb question. I remember being very frustrated that Windows alone did not allow me to view an HEIC image.

I use FastStone with .webp files often.  Just open the .webp file in FastStone then save as .jpg.

Since I haven’t gotten an .heic file in years, I went to this site and downloaded one:

          https://filesamples.com/formats/heic

It opened immediately in FastStone.  Then save as .jpg.

FSViewer HEIC files require both HEVC and HEIF

Thanks, Alex.  I don’t recall ever installing those extensions, but it’s possible.

I also use XNViewMP – another great image manager similar to FSViewer.  It too opens HEIC files.  The XNView website lists HEIC as a supported graphics format, with no mention of needing extensions.

Microsoft charge $0.99 for the HVEC video extension.

Worth noting that the HEIC codecs used to be free with Windows 10. Microsoft started charging for them within the last 2 years or so as I recall. For what reason I don’t know – probably greed.

I am still on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 and was surprised to find extensions in Apps & features list – or are they really there? Best I know, I did nothing to install them. Puzzled.

If you let Microsoft store app in you will be updated.
You can block Microsoft Store updates

Well, I do not have anything enabled in Group Policy to block Microsoft Store.

Then again, I do have Microsoft Store toggled Off from running as a background app.

Do I even want to block Microsoft Store? I might have gotten a 99 cent extension without paying anything (?) – which seems strange.

And I have gone almost all the way to Win10 End-of-life as things stand now. If I just noticed it now, what trouble might it cause?

You don’t need a group policy.
Just open Microsoft store and disable updates.
If you need an app, download manually.
