Looks like some very good stuff.

I have always liked flowcharting. It’s like programming, but without getting bogged down in the syntax of the computer code. But you HAVE to follow a logical, top-down process, emphasizing the main points of your logic, or you are going to have bugs and other issues; and that’s what makes flowcharting essential.

The problem I have with flowcharting is that I try to make it look so nice and neat that I get bogged down in the appearance of the flowchart. Therefore, I generally flowchart just by scribbling out my thoughts. For me, this is a lot quicker.

I don’t believe they have required flowcharting in a long time in university Computer Science classes. At least they didn’t where I went to school.

In a galaxy long ago and far far away (hey that could be the start of a film – sorry, movie), when programmer time was much, much cheaper than computer time, you had to flowchart, then ‘dry run’ the program, before even running the program for real.

Now in the real world, when computer time is much much cheaper than programmer time, you just write your code and see what happens when you run it!

Now in the real world, when computer time is much much cheaper than programmer time, you just write your code and see what happens when you run it!

And maybe, just maybe, that’s why Windows, Flash, Java, etc. have to be patched for security and other problems on a regular basis? I’m just sayin…!

BTW: I still have quite a collection of plastic flow charting templates from, as you say, back in the day. I still create flow charts and even include them in documentation especially for complicated procedures.

Hy RG, I too have a plastic flowchart template, or at least I did. Maybe it’s with my slide rule!
