I have a 7200 WD Ultra ATA/100 60 gig hard drive. Is it backwards compatible with less capable motherboards? Such as UDMA 100/133 etc? I think I have touched on this question before, but maybe not as specifically.

      In a word – yes.

The IDE Ultra ATA specification is completely backwards compatible, so any device that is rated at 133 will run at 100, 66, and 33 as well.

Be sure you have the proper cable for the hard drive. I tried plugging a newer Maxtor HD into an older PII system with a 40-pin cable, knowing that it would only run at 33 or 66. Oddly enough, it still needed the faster 80-pin cable before the system would even recognize it!!

        Ayup!

My sister recently order the Promise Ultra133TX2 card and the Maxtor D740X drive.
In order to connect her old IBM Titan drive to the new card, she may need to get an 80-wire, 40-pin IDE cable, but my eyes are not strong enough to see her computer 200+ miles away.
