Hard Returns in Text Mode

When I try to enter text in Adobe Photoshop and then press Enter to move down one line, the cursor moves to the beginning of the line that I am in rather than down one line. Is there a way to change this so that upon pressing enter, the cursor will shift down a line?

I don’t know Photoshop, but does Shift+Enter give better results?

Unfortunately, it does not. It jus takes me to the front of the same line, as does pressing enter.

How about alt-enter? That gives you a new line in a cell in XL, might work for PS too??

I’m sorry for not being clear.

Pressing control + enter causes whatever changes I implemented in the text box (i.e., text I added) to be accepted; it does NOT lead to a full return.

Pressing alt + enter does nothing.

Does anyone know of a good lounge for graphics question? I tried http://www.devppl.com but no one replies …

I am using the Type Tool to enter text. I think there must be a bug on my system. The excerpt you’ve copied shows that pressing enter should take me to the next line. Since enter instead takes me to the beginning of the same line, I can only conclude that there is a glitch somewhere in my program.

I think that Jefferson’s suggestion of trying the Adobe forums is worth pursuing, but if you find out the answer there, I’d be interested to see it reported back here.

Hello-

Not sure if this will work, but you can try the “Reset Character” menu under the Text menu. The attached .jpg shows the menu.

If there’s something funky going on within the text or paragraph settings, this will set everything back to the default settings.

Another option for quirky Photoshop issues is to delete your Photoshop preferences. Articles outlining how to do that:

When you start to use the text tool, are you just clicking where you want to start typing, or are you dragging a text frame first? Do you get the same result from pressing Enter in each case? What version of PShop are you using, on what OS? Is this behaviour new, or has the program always acted this way?

Also note that the Enter key on the number pad acts differently from the Enter key on the alpha pad. The number-pad key accepts your typed input, the same as CTRL + Enter on the alpha pad.

I just realized what the problem was! In that window posted by Artford333, in the Paragraph tab, I had my spacing between lines set at 0. I had to set it to something like 40 or 55 to get space between the lines. When it was set at 0, the cursor was in fact going to the next line, but it looked like it was going to the beginning of the same line because there was no space between the lines.

As a tip: that spacing setting will apply evenly between all of the lines in a particular text box in Photoshop. To change any individual line, you have to go to the font tab and play around with the setting on the bottom left, which allows you to raise a line.
