Like you, our plans for the day included working on a computer.

The planned work involved cloning the original C drive of our recently delivered HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation onto a 2 TB SSD, installing the new drive, and removing the original C drive for safe keeping.

However, my computer related plans have gone astray.  After cloning the drive to a 2 TB SSD in an external enclosure, we opened the computer’s case only to find that there is no power connection cable to tie the motherboard and SSD together.

So, it was back to the kitchen to make a pie, baste the turkey, and maybe be a little sociable.

Tomorrow we will try to track down the required power wire.

Oh don’t you hate it when you are so close but don’t have the right parts!

Our SSD cabling problem has been solved:

      • We took the cable out of a Tripp Lite 2.5” SATA Hard Drive Mounting Kit we had in our parts box,
      • Went out to the shop,
      • Carefully placed the dual connector in a vice we use to do metal work,
      • Grabbed a hacksaw,
      • Carefully cut between the two plugs,
      • Went back to the computer work area,
      • Installed the needed half of the divided cable in the PC,
      • Plugged in the computer, and
      • Watched it boot up.

Our version of Black Friday sale – a very low cost cable.

      Now all is well.

      Yea, Hacksaw.

And it was my Great Grandfather’s vice.

      Talk about old meeting new.

If you’ve been a customer of your ISP for a long time, consider calling them up and seeing if you can get a cheaper/faster deal. You may not want to call today, as chances are their staffing is lower today and thus you’d have longer wait times.

I’ve had good responses when calling customer support hotlines on big holidays and extremely odd hours (such as Saturday night at 11 pm PST).  There is often one technical support representative handling the one or two calls that happen to come in simultaneously.  Sometimes the tech helping me after hours is authorized to do higher-level fixes when the higher-level support techs are off duty.

Of course, my calls did not involve sales representatives, who are often slammed on holidays.
