Happy Easter! Celebrating this glorious Easter Sunday with my feisty, beautiful mum and her friends. Even with dementia she remembers I stuffed Easter candy in my hat to have a snack during church hahaha. She’s an amazing woman and I’m happy to share this glorious day with her.

Happy Easter, both right now for the members of all the Western Churches, and in anticipation of their celebrations to the members of the Orthodox churches of the East.

Now, here is a little essay on the name ‘Easter’, and why is it so different in English from the name of this religious event in other languages.

Reading the title of Woody’s earlier blog on the Passover celebrations, someone thought he had used a Hungarian keyboard by mistake when writing the title, although he had just written “Happy Passover” in Hebrew : “Chag Pesach samech”, where ‘Pesach’ = ‘Passover’

And I started to wonder how come that Easter, that this year mostly overlaps with Passover, is called ‘Easter’ in English, when in other languages (Greek, Latin, and the romantic ones Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and Rumanian) have similar names that are  completely different from it and all derived directly from ‘Pesach’ and still sounding a bit like it.

In trusty Wikipedia all is revealed:  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter

“Easter”, and similar words in other Northern European languages (e.g. German, and Dutch) are derived from the ancient name of a goddess that was also that of the month of April, when both Passover and Easter usually take place — and when people there had their coming-of-Spring ceremonies, named after her. People from those parts kept the old name for the Christian celebration after converting to their new religion and (with some changes in pronunciation and spelling) until today.

      So: not Hungarian.

Several people have been arrested already on suspicion of planning and carrying out those appalling attacks. One should hope the Sri-Lankan authorities will act fairly and effectively to stop such religion-related, destabilizing violence:

Also to be hoped, is that the Christian community there keeps firmly in mind the scriptural injunction to “turn the other cheek” and leave the exercise of justice to the justice system, as acts of personal revenge, violent ones in particular, being most often countered with further revenge, are the self-defeating and vainest of vanities:

        Matthew 5:38-40

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.”
