I saw about the risk of fireworks shows in drought areas being replaced by LCD-carrying, computer-controlled drones – what a great (and safer) use of technology!

May you all have a happy and safe celebration 🙂

Woody and his son Arlo’s remarkable songs about America really do put a stamp on the various cultural and societal changes that were brought about in the last century.

Those songs stand by themselves, partly because they are songs of the times, and because of the opening of thoughts and ideas normally not considered. But they existed because of everything that has gone before them – even back to colonial times. Woody spoke/sang of the time he lived in, and what that life was like. Arlo did a variation on that same theme in dealing with Pop music and the Selective Service Act that sent so many young and unprepared Americans to war in Viet Nam.

And as strong and effective as those songs were, I don’t know how they changed anything in the long term. I suspect that they began to change people’s thoughts and ideas about war – war of culture and war of military might. At least back in the ’70’s – and that is now ancient history.

Those who were around back then can at least hear those echoes. And now that we are “not” at war, perhaps believe that things are better.

I for one do not believe that is true.

This specific couplet is found in the fifth verse, one of the “radical” verses, contained in “This Land”.  Woody Guthrie was afraid to perform these “radical” verses, particularly after the song became popular and, hence, because Woody didn’t perform them, they had become forgotten.  Near the end of his life, Woody became concerned people would never hear these verses again, so he took Arlo aside and made him memorize all the lyrics to “This Land”, seven verses in all, so that the “radical” verses would not be forgotten and would be passed on to future generations.  Like a good son, Arlo followed his father’s direction and has made sure, most of the time, to perform this verse while in concert or with smaller groups of people.  Woody Guthrie – A Life by Joe Klein, p. 437, hardbound first edition 1980.

That was during the blacklist day’s.  If you wanted to make a living and record songs you had to change the lyrics.  Whereas  with live shows for fellow travelers you could use the “radical”  lyrics. Nowadays the term used is “dog whistle”.
