Windows 2000 service pack 2 hangs on restart or shutdown at a plain blue screen with only the mouse pointer, which is active and not frozen. I can shutdown/restart from Safe mode without a hang. I have searched the MS Knowlegde Base and nothing applies including Q2622575 (the mouse is active). Other than shutdown/restart my system seems to operate properly. Prior to this problem IE 5.1 (service pack 2) stopped responding. I tried to terminate it from Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and got a message that the program could not be closed, that De###### was running and to close de######. I could not find any evidence that de###### was running or how to shut it down. My only alternative was to hit the system reset button. An hour or so later I noticed the hang on shutdown/restart problem. I have updated my antivirus dat files and scanned for viruses. Any thoughts?

      A few questions:
1] During shutdown, do you get the ‘saving your settings’ window? If so, is it after that it hangs?
2] Any hibernate or power saving options running?
      3] Wake-on-demand NIC or modem?
      4] Real-time virus scanning enabled?

Try shutting down with TaskManager running, Processes window showing, sorted on CPU. See if you can spot anything which may give a clue.

        I healed itself!!
It would hang before I got the “Saving your settings window”. The screen would go to total blue (no icons or task bar) and just sit there with an active mouse pointer but nothing else. I tried the shutdown with TaskManager running as you suggested and it locked. Again I hit the reset button. Window seemed to start normally until the task bar appeared at the bottom of the screen, but nothing else, no icons on the screen, just the task bar with the Start button along the bottom. At this point there was disc activity for about 4 minutes and then all the desk top icons appeared, and everything seemed to be working normally. I then tried a Restart which went normally including the Saving system window. There was no delay this time in the appearance of the desktop icons. I have no idea what caused the problem, or how it was repaired, but the system appears to be operating normally. Thanks
BTW, “No” to items 2-4 in your reply.

Recommend you run chkdsk and a defrag on your drives. Hope it stays healed!

I just ran defrag, but can’t find chkdsk/scan disc in Windows 2000. Does it exist in W2K?

              My Computer ->
Right_mouse a drive and select Properties
              Tools – Error checking
(If the drive has any files in use – e.g. where W2K is installed – it will offer to set to run at boot time.)

              Just as a BTW, I run Chkdsk every week. . . .

The bug is back. After several hour of normal operation I entered a URL address in the IE 5.1 address window and hit enter at which point I got an hour glass that remained for several minutes. I could not activate the Stop button or close IE. Task Manager reported that IE was not responding. I tried to end it the task but that process locked. I was able to close Outlook 2000 normally (I think) which was also running. Then with the Task Manager window open and the process window showing and sorted by CPU, I clicked on Start and Shutdown – Restart. I got a Save System setting window for a long time then a blue screen with and active mouse pointer and then a hang. I waited a long time, at least 20 minutes and then did a system reset. Start up appeared normal but now I am back to the the original problem with a hang up on Shutdown/Reatart before the Saving System Settings window.

OK. Anything showing in the Event Viewer?

Yes there is a lot there. I am attaching a word document in which I pasted error messages that have appeared in the last couple of day. I am concerned about the ones that mention something about the “Master browser” conflict, and the duplicate name in the TCP network. I have 3 computers on the network. I included a screen shot of the results of running nbstat -n. I am not sure where the duplicate name is.

Did you ever get this resolved. I am having the same exact problem that you have described

Tom, I am racking my brain for the fix but can not remember. I have upgraded to Windows XP Professional, and my WIndows 2000 memory is fading. If it comes to me I will let you know.

I ended going into msconfig and turning off direct CD and a couple of other programs and it looks like it fixed it self.
