i cannot access safe mode, i get an error “cannot display this video mode” i bought a seperate pnp vid card and this did not help. however i can use f8 and get the start up options and use the debugging mode and then it will start in safe mode, a sys restore doesnt help. if i do a regular restart, it just hangs up at black windows screen and the progress indicator moves side to side. forever. i reinstalled windows (xp media) and it rebooted fine 3 or 4 times, then this problem continues to arise. i am tired of reinstalling windows. i have chaged monitors, and display options to no avail. the hard drive is new, motherboard and processor is new and also the power supply.

    i am in aww…

    please help

correction i use directory services repair mode to boot into saFE MODE

    thank you

    Ty

A bit more information about your hardware (particularly the monitor) would be helpful. A quick Google of the error message yielded the following information about Dell Dimension/ Dell flat panel monitors…..

      From here…
“Restart the computer in VGA mode in Windows XP.
To restart the computer in VGA mode, perform the following steps:

      1. Click the Start button, click Shutdown, click Restart The Computer, and then click Yes to restart the computer.

NOTE: If the system is not displaying video, pressing and holding the power button until the system shuts down can be used to restart the system.

      2. When the message Starting Windows… appears, press the key.
The Please select the option: screen appears.
      3. Use the arrow keys to highlight Enable VGA Mode and press the key.

Lower the Display Resolution in Display Properties for Microsoft® Windows® XP

      1. At the Desktop, right-click on any empty area of the screen, and then click Properties in the menu that appears.
      The Display Properties window appears.
      2. Click the Settings tab.
      3. Move the slider in the Screen Resolution section of the Display Properties windows towards Less until the resolution reads 1024 by 768 pixels.
      4. Click the OK button.
The Display Properties windows will disappear.

NOTE: The screen may flicker or pause at a black screen for a few moments as it changes resolution.

      5. Click the Start button and then click Turn Off Computer.
The Turn off computer window appears.
      6. Click the Restart button and allow the system to restart normally.”

I AM SO SORRY, IN MY FRENZY I HAVE FORGOT TO MENTION ALREADY TRYING VGA MODE, I STILL GET THE CANNOT DISPLAY VIDEO.. ACTUALLY AFTER A RESTART IT HANGS UP AT BLACK WINDOWS SCREEN… I ALSO CHANGESD MY DISPLAY TO THE LOWEST SETTING AND 16 COLORS WHEN I FINALLY GOT IT TO BOOT IN DIRECTORY SERVICES..

MY MONITOR IS A 21 IN LCD PROVIEW… I HAVE A DELL 17 IN HOOKED UP TO IT NOW. I TOOK THE VIDEO CARD BACK TO STAPLES AS IT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM

It’s OK Ty. No need to shout (turn off your Caps Lock key) wink. smile As I said, a bit more information about your hardware would be helpful. This appears to be a hardware issue. Take a look at this Google and see if anything there helps. If not, then let us know the model of the Dell monitor, what model and manufacturer is the PC. Did you try the fix with the Dell connected ???
