I just had Windows 10 Pro 64 installed on a Dell Latitude E6540 computer that had Windows 7 64.  An intel Graphics Driver was installed.  When I go to the Dell Support website it recommends that I install AMD Radeon HD 8790 Graphics driver.

    Graphics Specs from Speccy:

    Generic PnP Monitor (1920×1080@60Hz)
    Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Dell)
2048MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 8790M (Dell)
    CrossFire Disabled

Computer seems to be running fine.  Wondering if there is any benefit for downloading the AMD Radeon driver.  Also, this driver is from 2015 and if I go to the AMD site to upgrade the outdated driver from the Dell webiste, I have had problems (with a different identical computer running Windows 7) and had to do a System Restore.  I am wondering what the benefit would be of installing the AMD graphics driver.  Will it do any more than the Intel Graphics driver?  Thanks.

The dell site’s driver was updated in October 2019. It contains the version number in the full details, which you can compare against the driver currently installed.

I have found drivers causing BSOD at random times from things that newer updates solve.

At the end of the day, it’s your computer, and your call as to whether you update it or not, but you might want to download a copy of the current version, for later use if needed.

Thanks – just realized that the AMD driver is installed and I have version 15.200.145.0 installed.  This version is from 10/20/15 updated 11/8/19

      Version – 15.201.1101, A01, Released 20 Oct 2015 Updated 08 Nov 2019

Here is the reason for the update: AMD Graphic driver update for Windows update(WU)

So – given this reason – would you install it?

All that tells us is that it’s recommended. Up to you whether you have issues it might fix.
FWIW, I don’t remember ever having issues with Dell updates and I’ve done a lot.

      cheers, Paul

I always update to the latest GPU (Intel, Nvidia/AMD) drivers. Apart from bug fixes, security fixes,..the updates add support for the latest OS versions, games, software…

Intel GPUs are used for the common tasks and share RAM with the system while discreet GPUs comes with their own RAM and use for more intensive tasks like graphic apps, games…

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions.

Since this is a new installation on a new 512GB SSD on an older computer (purchased refurbished 2 years ago – Dell Latitude E6540, 16 mg RAM, I7) are there specific suggestions before I begin using it extensively?  For example, I used Macrium to image the drive.  Should I be doing anything else to preserve this copy of Windows?

Since I do not have a disk for the new operating system, what should I be doing in the case I need a backup?  Also been using CCleaner and Auslogics Disk Defragmenter in the past on Win7 however not sure what maintenance is needed on this new Win10Pro installation.

Creating image copy with Macrioum on a scheduled basis to an external HDD is good enough.

Don’t use CCleaner. Replace with portable cPortable.
You don’t run defrag on SSDs. SSDs firmware has TRIM build-in and Windows 10 has a scheduled task to check storage and run TRIM when needed.

You should backup your data on a regular basis as that is likely to change more often than Windows. I backup my files daily and Windows weekly, when you do yours is up to you.

      SSDs firmware has TRIM build-in

TRIM is not defrag, it is part of the normal operation of an SSD.
Manual defrag is not required on W10 because Windows does it for you as part of regular maintenance.

Don’t use CCleaner. Replace with portable cPortable

You don’t need to use either. Windows maintenance will automatically do most of it for you.

      cheers, Paul
