I am attending a Digital Photography course and the class has been advised to consider a Graphic Tablet.
I am confused because the price varies so greatly and never having seen one I do not know what to consider.
Do they replace the mouse? I am very happy with my Logitech combo.
The prices vary greatly, the one that appeals is the Lapazz 12 X 9 Wired currently available in Oz for $149.95.
    Any advice appreciated.

Hi there. Tablets can replace your mouse, but many folks just use their tablets for specific uses (digital art, photography, retouching, etc), and then switch back to using a mouse for general use. I use a Wacom Intuos2 tablet for my own digital retouching, and have been very happy with it so far. Because of my bias, I strongly recommend the Wacom brand. Their basic line prices aren’t too rough, and you can get a basic Bamboo tablet for $100-$200ish that will meet your needs. Go here for more info on Wacom’s products.

      I hope this helps!

      Thanks Keely,
Would you advise what is involved after the original installation to swap between the mouse and the tablet, is it simply a matter of removing the mouse (mine is wireless) or can the tablet and the mouse co-exist?

Your mouse and tablet can both coexist just fine. After your initial software installation (keep in mind I am only advising from my experience with Wacom), you are ready at any time to use your tablet.

Thank you Keely, I will take the plunge and further advise in about a month.

Whenever the discussion comes up re drawing with a mouse vs a tablet. I am reminded of a friend of mine who said that drawing with a mouse, was like drawing with a potato.

Drawing with a mouse is terrible. I don’t know how people do it. Tablets are far more intuitive, and once you get the hang of it, you don’t know how you worked without one. Tablets for all!

You girls have got me into trouble. I have today ordered a WACOM BAMBOO FUN PEN & TOUCH MEDIUM GRAPHICS TABLET CTH-661/S0, the bundled software makes the purchase worthwhile. Only kidding about the trouble at age 72 I can just remember (or dream).

I am on my third Wacom tablet and while I don’t know the specifics of the model you have ordered, I doubt that you have made a bad choice. The bundled software does (or can, depending on your starting-point) make the purchase worthwhile. Prices do, as you noted, vary considerably, but one factor is the area of the tablet (we tend to forget how much difference it makes when you multiply two dimensions) and another is the number of fussy details such as degrees of stylus sensitivity, which can matter a great deal when doing intricate work.

      Good luck with it!
