Interesting. Firefox has used that icon for quite a while now – just for site permissions. To its left is the lock icon for secure connection status. And then left of that is the shield for its tracking protection.

I wonder if Mozilla will follow suit and start merging those into one button that opens an “all in one” menu.

They replaced the lock icon because “no one knows what it means.”

The browser was providing correct info, but people misinterpreted it, so… now they just remain silent on the issue and don’t provide any information explicitly. Yes, I know, now that TLS is the norm, the browser will display an icon if the connection is not encrypted, but if people couldn’t grasp what it was telling them before, how are they to not have this new development change to “out of sight, out of mind?”

I am running Chrome 114 (beta)

Since you say you have the new icon, and that you’re running 114 beta, then perhaps they decided to beta test the new icon for a few months to flush out any hiccups that might come up between now and the September release of version 117.

OR, maybe they’ve decided to roll it out to the general public in an earlier version than 117, perhaps in version 115 or 116 instead, and so that’s why you’re seeing it in 114 beta.

was simply trying to tell @Pepsiboy why the new icon was absent on that particular machine that has Windows 7 on it.
