Wed Sep 13 Stable Channel Desktop Update

Stable channel has been updated to 109.0.5414.165

Fri Sep 8 Chromium Change log showing libwebp was updated.

Note: the Chrome auto-updater doesn’t find the new 109.0.5414.165 update (at least it didn’t on my Win7 PC) so it needs to be downloaded from the below link and “manually” updated.

    https://www.google.com/dl/release2/chrome/ggsdppo5kshsyqe3fej7lv4tau_109.0.5414.165/109.0.5414.165_chrome_installer.exe

    Just FYI, the above installer works for Win7, 8, 8.1, Servers 2008r2, 2012 & 2012r2.

Also, on my system, it gave absolutely no indication it was actually done updating Chrome but Chrome on my Win7 PC now shows as version 109.0.5414.165!

They did as webP is a serious critical security bug.

What did you have to do to make the update happen?

When I ran the installer, it would open chrome as if it was a new install but then not update.

Can you tell me what I missed?

I thought it would just drop in on top of my current chrome install but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

      that is for 64bit Windows 7, 8.x, 10 & Server 2008/2012 systems only

here’s the one for 32bit Windows 7 & 8.x (oh yes, some people do run 32bit/x86 Windows versions as well)

      @Moonbear

      Run “109.0.5414.165_chrome_installer.exe –system-level”
this will sort of “force update” or clean install the Chrome 109 browser into the \Program Files\Google\Chrome folder of the local drive.

running the EXE installer by itself (w/out the –system-level switch) will do as you described, not as what I described

        Thank you

Where do I add the –system-level switch before running the installer?

Also is there any chance this will undo my settings?

That somehow happened with what I did this morning.

        • #2588411

after the EXE file. you have to type this in the Run dialog box

if 109.0.5414.165_chrome_installer.exe is stored in the folder with a short name like c:\temp,
          I run it like this:

          C:\temp\109.0.5414.165_chrome_installer.exe –system-level

if the folder where the EXE installer is stored has a longer name and has spaces or certain special characters in it, put the whole folder path in “quotes” and put –system-level after it.

          ex. “C:\Users\user example\Desktop\109.0.5414.165_chrome_installer.exe” –system-level

Also is there any chance this will undo my settings?

it should not. I’ve tested running the EXE installer with the –system-level switch so many times on so many Win7/8.x/10 systems for so many years (even when Google Chrome first came out in 2008) and all my Chrome browser settings were kept intact

            Thanks again

I felt like I was beating my head against the wall with how it acted before.

The installer will be in my downloads file when I re-download it, so the example definitely helps.

I use a standard user account, but I have also chrome on the admin account.

(I used run as administrator on my original chrome install.)

Will I need to log directly into the admin account and run the installer there as well?

Or will one run update both?

I thought it would just drop in on top of my current chrome install but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

I ran it from an Admin account (without using the -system-level option) not a standard account which might be why you encountered the strange behavior.

Also, as I noted, it did NOT indicate it actually updated Chrome (i.e. there was no relaunch chrome prompt) but when I restarted Chrome it showed it was updated to the new version.

Thank you very much for your help. Following your instructions and using the system-level switch on a standard account, I managed to install the update and Chrome now shows the updated version. I rarely use this Windows 7 installation online and when I do I don’t use Chrome, but I like that it has this fix just in case. I appreciate the specific instructions, since I wasn’t having any luck getting it to update on either an administrative account or a standard account before following them.

Does chrome appear in both your admin and standard accounts?

I ask because on my system I installed chrome before I began using a standard account and every time I updated chrome on my standard account it would show as having been updated on the admin account as well.

Did the system level switch work the same way?

        • #2588735

          @moonbear
Chrome is on both accounts. I didn’t check the admin account after the update to make sure it was there as well, but I’ll check and let you know when I have access to that laptop again. I was presuming that the system-level switch would do just that but I didn’t check.

I ran the installer + switch last night and chrome updated on both accounts as I hoped.

      Hello,

I used the 109.0.5414.165_chrome_installer.exe -system-level it updated well Google Chrome but it did not appear in Program and Features, why ?

How to make it to Programs and Features as it is how we are getting the inventory?

      Thanks,
