I just started listening to Mary Jo and Paul’s Windows Weekly. There was a comment about Google Fi in Asia – Mary Jo had a great experience in Japan.

It wasn’t something I had come across before, but I found Project Fi FAQs.

Project Fi puts you on the best available network between Wi-Fi and three 4G LTE networks. This means you get access to more cell towers and 4G LTE in more places.

Project Fi is available on the Pixel, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6.

Some how i cant imagine that sleepy little town of Siem Reap or Angkor being invaded by the all conquering cell phone, hope your not going over land it was a bit of a fraught experience years ago. Phnom Penn is probably the little frantic bustly place and home of Jan Krohn if memory serves me right. Got me pining for “backpacking” days here, cant remember the Beer there only it was cold and delicious (probably imported Singha lol) well have a few for me and the rest of the folks, Oii! dont forget a few “pic’s” bit of light relief from boring old KB Numbers hehe

I was last in Angkor in 1990. It’s been a while. But I guess Siem Reap is all grown up now – 2 million visitors a year. When I went, I could hear automatic weapon fire in the distance. You flew in early in the morning and the plane waited for the return trip to BKK. Lots of strange stories…

@woody well I was going to say in the last post “dont stray off the well worn path” (for obvious reasons) sounds like you already know the drill lol and yes in the 90’s I think every one who wandered in to that part of the world had a lot of strange tales. wouldnt stop me going back in a Heartbeat though lol

I’ve been debating about the pics. Don’t really want to clutter this site with them. I’ve also been debating where to put a belated travelog – the old trip to Angkor, Lhasa, Sikkim, meeting with the Dalai Lama, Mother (now Saint) Teresa, and the like…

Google wants to kill your phone

The sole remaining justification for the continued existence of the “phone” part of a smartphone is that the voice network is generally more reliable and higher quality than internet-based phone options.

But it’s only a matter of time before Internet-based calls are better than voice network calls. Google is trying to accelerate this process.

Google this week announced G Suite compatibility with Project Fi.

Google Fi represents a revolutionary idea: phones that automatically switch both voice calls and data connections between different carriers, and between voice networks and VoIP over WiFi. It does this using a purpose-built antenna structure and custom SIM card, plus special software. That special hardware is why you can fully use Google Fi only on Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel and Pixel XL phones, although that lineup is about to change.

Eventually, Project Fi phones will lack only one thing — the ability to connect to a mobile voice network.
