Hard to find the right place to post this.

GMAIL IMAP on both iPhone and Windows Outlook times out syncing folders and retrieving email. Works perfectly for hours, then stops working again. MUST be their servers. Since both iPhone refreshing my All Mail box  through Apple Mail app and Outlook checking inbox, it has to be them and not me.

Web based is fine. I am told those using the GMail app have no issues. But my two cases stand.  To this very moment. And does not matter whether WiFi or Cellular.

Open to ideas. Curious if anyone else has this.

Thanks, but this is NOT the issue. I have that working with 2 step. But also IPHONE. And it is intermittent.

Gmail app on the iPhone ? Mine works flawlessly.
Any 3rd party for Gmail app on the iPhone will need the same changes as on desktop.

NOT Gmail app, as I said. Apple Mail App. And working perfectly with the changes UNTIL yesterday.

Has to be a server issue. Wondering if Cellular and WiFi use the same DNS on iPhone. Will have to search.

      But thanks.

Just started working again with no changes I made anywhere.

      Down again 🙁

Them who? Contact the entity you think is the source of problems and ask if there are difficulties. This approach will give you a start at solving your mail problem.

Them being gmail imap servers. How would you contact them?

    • #2453335

Of course you don’t contact servers. But its also incredibly difficult to contact Google. And I worked part time with them years ago and do no better than most.  Amnd have had email since 1986, so I know a little.

And I checked all the “is xxxx down” sites before posting here. Not granular enoughCan no t report or view IMAP issues. so who knows what problems people have.

Searching Googl eSupport for IMAP server does not connect, or respond, or brings up pages of how to check my settings. Not helpful.

And that article is from 2020 and I DO NOT HAVE A CONFIGURATION ISSUE. Please stop that. It is working again and works intermittently with out me CHANGING ANYTHING.

If there is a better and more granular site for specific issues with things like Gmail, I would love to know. The ones I find are more helpful with simpler sites.

And now its running like a well oiled IMAP server again.

This is the same search I provided above:

This link is the third item in the list:

An internet search is your friend.

Those are old issues from 2 years ago, or how to fix your settings for IMAP and sign-in with 2 step authentication or reports of Google website of being down. NONE show todays or yesterday’s IMAP server issues at Google which IS the problem.

I posted this kinda as a public service for someone who, like I might have searched and found nothing appropriate. I said both Apple and Outlook. I said working perfectly after the May 30 2 step authorization. I said intermittent last two days.

And I was a ressearcher for Google for 4 years so know how to search, thank you very much 🙂

For some reason this also may be regional so I had a small hunch might be DNS related in some way. But as I asked, would love to find one link (other than here) that shows Google’s IMAP servers are having issues in the last 48 hours. Not Outlook not connecting because of 2 Step. Not website down.  Etc.

So I appreciate the help, but it does not address my posted issue, which as I said, was to help others who might be wondering why they were having recent issues and to see if anyone else came in to say yep, I have the same thing.

I’ll refrain from that in the future.

You are not the only one.  This has been driving me bonkers.  I have six users  who have all correctly set up their 2FA and yet can no longer get into gMail via Outlook.  I’ve seen scores of posts telling me to check the ports, check the IMAP setting, check my 2FA, try to use the app specific passwords, etc.  NONE of these things has been the issue.

Interestingly, I took the credentials (and the phone) for one of the users and added her account to my outlook and it worked flawlessly.  Whiskey Tango!?  That led me to believe that the problem must be related to her installation of Office or Outlook.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the entire shebang.  No dice.  Same problem.

Aside from rebop2020 here, and some fellow on another site who speaks a language that makes it difficult to communicate, I have yet to find any one else experiencing this.  Certainly, I’ve not found any answers.

As a company, we’ve decided to move to Exchange and ditch gMail.  It seems like gMail is very quick to decide “screw the user and their legacy software — full speed ahead.”  While that can be useful for making stuff advance, it can also leave lots of wreckage along the highway.

        Resolution.

This morning, one user reported that he’d been able to get into Outlook.  First, he got an error message asking if he wanted to contact technical support.  When he hit No, Outlook opened and all of his eMail (finally) began to flood in to the beautiful warm palace that is Outlook.

I had my other users try it.  As long as ALL of Outlook was killed off in Task Manager first, then everything boots up easy as you please.

I didn’t make any changes to MSO admin center, nor gMail’s convoluted control center.

We’re still going to move to Exchange, but at least now it isn’t an emergency.
