I had to reformat our hard drive and install the OS (XP Pro) all our programs – no dramas.
However Microsoft Messenger keep reappearing in the Systray.
I have gone to MSCONFIG and taken this program off the Start menu, yet if I open Outlook Epress, Microsoft Messenger automatically opens up.
Yes, I have unticked the box in Outlook Express so that I do not want Microsoft Messenger to open up.
Then once again Microsoft Messenger is back in the systray.

Please lead my by the nose and instruct me how to get rid of this intrusive program once and for all.

      Does this help?

You can open Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs, then Add / Remove Windows Components and then uncheck Windows Messenger. Click Next etc and you’re done.
These instructions are for Windows Messenger, which is native with XP. If installed MSN Messenger separately, remove it as you would with any other program. That won’t remove Windows Messenger, though, so the previous recommendation still applies.

      Two things:

If you setup Outlook Express 6 to be your email client, there is a box in there, under Options, that’s checked by default, to open Messenger when you open O.E.6
If I’m setting up O.E. for either myself or a client, I always UN-check that box, so messenger won’t start up.

Then at least on my own PC’s, I find the messenger folder and just delete everything in the folder.
That’s kind of ‘Hammer and Chisel’ technology, but hey, it works. I never need to worry about messenger again.

      Just a thought!
