Win 11 23H2 but it’s happened with earlier versions also. Have a Red Dragon keyboard.

While typing at times I’ll get a non-english letter – this was “for” – fo₹ – happened in Thunderbird but happens in any app as far as I can tell. I have all the settings in the keyboard software and in windows settings set to English – North American. I am not the nimblest typist, and I think it happens when I manage to hit a couple keys at once, but I haven’t been able to  duplicate it on purpose. Sometimes it’s an e with a ` above it or something.

Guess I’m looking for anything I might be able to do in windows to stop it from occurring. I don’t think my typing is going to improve…Thanks.

If this was happening to me, the first thing I would try is a different keyboard. (Even if I had to borrow one.) At least then you could determine if it is your Windows install or if it is hardware specific.

I’ve had several keyboards, but can’t remember if I had the same problem or not. So I’ve mounted a different keyboard and uninstalled the RedDragon software. Only problem is it only happens occasionally so I’m not sure how lot it will take to have another one, or not have another one…

As another test, you could try running the RedDragon keyboard without the RedDragon software. (Or is it required?) But, that could isolate it being something specific with their software.

That I tried PL1, didn’t change anything. And the new keyboard just this morning put up an upside down ? as a space, although it may have been in conjunction with another key press, I tend to hit double-keys which seems to cause the problem. But I don’t understand why I get a foreign letter or symbol when every windows setting is English (United States) . Must be a setting somewhere that allows keyboard entry but I can’t find it. Thanks again for your help.

      Is PowerToys installed?

(If so, is Quick Accent enabled there?)

Goto to Settings > Time and language > Language > Preferred languages

If the language is set for English (United States International), change it to English (United States).

If there are any extra languages besides English, remove them.

Click the English (United States) language and then the Options button.

Under Keyboards, make sure US QWERTY is the “only” keyboard option.

b, power toys is installed, and quick accent enabled. I disabled it. nOads, all of those settings were already what you suggested. Thank you both.

I haven’t had any issues since I disabled power toys quick accent, so expect that was the issue along with my sloppy keyboard fingering… Thanks to all, going to mark this resolved if I can figure out how to do that…
