PC World has a special deal on W10 Pro until 6/30/20. There is a link for the store at the bottom of the article. The store says that the ISO is November 2019, 5.0 GB. This is PC World which has been around for years, so I’m thinking that this is legit. I’m going to get at least 1.

This offer is for a Microsoft-licensed retail version of Windows 10 Pro, and not an OEM version. If you’re already using Windows 10 Home, you can drop in the product key you purchase for Professional, and your PC will upgrade accordingly.

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

I bought a license this morning and I bought an install DVD also (for an extra $6.95), just under $50.00 w/tax. When you buy it there is a link for the MCT if you need it and a link for instructions. It’s a retail license. Not bad for a Pro license key.

Home to Pro decent deal, almost too good to be true.
They’d have to pay me to use it outwith testing IMO 🙂

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

It’s hard to imagine that PC World would sell bad keys. From what I gather, the license’s come from creativemark which is based in the UK.

A friend just pointed this sale out to me, too. I can’t imagine PCWorld getting involved in selling non-legit retail licenses either. I’m thinking I’ll upgrade my wife’s laptop from Home to Pro. I’m wondering if it will also upgrade an OEM Win 10 Pro making it into a RETAIL install??

It seems that you can by replacing the current key with a retail key. At least it was true for Windows 7.

Same price as an external USB hard disk to use for a backup. Hmm!

Have you installed it and used it enough to give a real-world OK?

Woody, Susan, PKC … please offer opinions of legitimacy!!

I remain confused about a (potential) warranty replacement of my SSD Drive and WHETHER I could re-install the OEM W10 Home (Best Buy desktop purchase) after new warranty drive install. THIS Offer for Retail and No Drive Replacement W10 License issue would be WHY I do this.

Changing a drive should not cause a Windows warranty problem.
It’s when you change a motherboard or processor that you get questions about activation.

Even with a Motherboard or Processor Failure the Value would still be there IF this is all an OK transaction.

Hopefully CaDesertRat will confirm an install netted a working system with no issue.

For Big Box store New Computer purchases where W10 Home was an OEM install – WHAT happens IF you change the W10 KEY to Pro Upgrade and something forces a Return to Home via Macrium Image. HOW would a Key Reversal ( Belarc shows what I presume is an HP corp OEM Key for HOME) transpire with MS? Seems a relevant question.

Updated Belarc shows Home(prior license) AND Pro (current ) License.

winver shows Pro installed (1909, may patch)

So far I haven’t seen any issues. I have NOT run thru every possible way to verify but for $40  I’ll take it!

            I use Fire Fox.

No, I have not used the key yet, I bought it for a spare key to use in the future for another build. At the price and who was offering it, I decided to get it.

To test the key, you could enter it into the “change product key” selection for a Home version, and then MS will “verify” (test) the key.  If it’s a legit one you would be offered to “continue” for an upgrade to Pro, but you can just cancel out right then without making any actual changes.  You would find out now though if MS recognizes the key as OK.

Thanks for the advice but I’m not too concerned at this point in time. When it comes time to use it, it will either work or it won’t and I’ll adjust accordingly.

I started this post to share the low cost of W10 Pro in this case so anyone else can use it or not, at their discretion. As I said earlier, I find it hard to believe that PC World would offer a Bogus deal like this. I actually found out about it on YouTube from Cary Holzman’s channel and he had purchased it and used it.

        yup.

The offer works in Chrome, I don’t have Firefox so I don’t have a clue about that.

          MSFT gave permission? Who knows.

I purchased from this company in the distant past(distant to me cause I can’t recall what it was) and all went as promised. No problems- I WOULD have remembered that!

I purchased this offer and all seems as presented.  winver=1909  18363.836

followed by remarks about win10 PRO operating system…protected by trademark…” etc

The Home version was (is) paused till mid July and June patch hasn’t been installed. Waiting on Woody! In the past couple days, reCaptcha hasn’t been working.-simply cannot submit and no puzzle appears. I see its back 🙁

        • #2275279

          Works with Firefox- so far.

And what assurance is there that the Windows licenses that PC World has special deals on are in fact a legal licenses?

I take some comfort in the fact that the article referenced at the top of this thread was written by Jon Phillips, Editor-in-Chief PCWorld but the link in the article takes you to the “PCWorld Software Store”.

On the other hand, I find the prices being quoted to be incredible, see the comparison below:

Product                     PCWorld              NewEgg               BestBuy               Walmart               CDW

      Norton 360 Deluxe   19.99                    29.99                   34.99                   29.99                   NA

      Laplink PCmover      24.95                    39.99                   29.95                   29.95                  49.99

      Windows 10 Pro        39.99                   99.99                   99.99                     NA                     59.99

      Office Home/ Bus     149.00                 229.99                  249.99                 228.99              249.99

      How do they do it?

    • #2275320

      Since it’s a retail version
Use Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) to run slmgr -xpr once the OS product key is activated.

I believe it should report “This machine is permanently activated”
      — If I’m wrong, please let me know.

      A Clarification:

The PCWorld software store states the following “When you buy Windows 10 Professional, you’ll be presented with the latest ISO which offers you the very latest November 2019 update.

That leads one to believe you’ll get the 1909 ISO. Not the case. To get an ISO you’re given a link to download the Media Creation Tool which gives you version 2004 not 1909. (If you have a squirreled-away ISO of 1909, then your bases are covered!)

I have a Dell desktop with Windows 10 Home that updated to 2004 on June 1 from 1909 and all is well and still results in permanently activated.

I also have an HP laptop with Windows 10 Pro which is still on 1909 that reports permanently activated.
      — My 2004 notification reads “The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it’s ready for your device, you’ll see the update available on this page.”
      — I don’t expect any issues when it’s ready to normally be installed as well as report permanently activated.

For those who have done this or know … was Pro Activation Automatic or manually required? Some YouTube sites imply manual activation for some but not specifically Who-Why.

My HOME showsWindows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account (setup as a Local acct) –. Logged-in to my MS acct I see nothing about Upgrading and can’t tell HOW MS knows it is My acct that upgraded to Pro Unless it (ie) “Reads” my desktop W10 data During Upgrade.  Thanks as always!

That’s because they are going to be restocked on 7/1/2020. They are out of stock on the item right now. They must have sold a LOT of them.
