I cannot get the Encrypting File System (EFS) to work. I am running a plain vanilla Dell PC on which they loaded Windows XP. The disk format is NTFS as it should be. When I try to encrypt a file or folder, I right click on it to bring up its Properties. Then on the General tab I click on Advanced. Now in ALL cases the “Encrypt contents to secure data” check box is grayed out and unusable. The Windows XP Help system seems to ignore all possibilities of encryption, so is of no help. I’d really appreciate learning how to turn this feature on.

    Thanks, John

I searched for encrypt in help and got various hits, all of which assume the box is not grayed out. grin Is it possible that a service that needs to be running isn’t running?

I found my problem. Knowledgebase article number 307877 contains the sentence “The EFS feature is not included in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.” I’m running Home Edition. Thanks for the effort.
