I know this is off topic, but I hope I can get some ideas about what might be happening. I have Window 8.1, all updates, I have Karpersky Internet Suite, and Malwarebytes Professional. My genealogy program, called Legacy, was working fine Saturday night and Sunday morning wouldn’t start, nothing when I clicked on it. I have run full scans with Karpersky, including a root web scan, and Malwarebytes and an online scan and everything shows clear. I have uninstalled the program, reinstalled it, nothing, I uninstalled again and installed in Safe Mode and still nothing. I went through the same process with an older version and the same result. The tech at Legacy has been trying to help but has run out of ideas. It has to be something that is blocking that program, because everything else works great without a hitch. This is a program I use everyday and would really like to get it up and going. Any ideas about how Windows could be blocking this one program, especially since it has been working great until then. I am wondering whether it could be a Windows update?
Thanks for any ideas, and I apologize for posting here, but kind of desperate at the moment

AskWoody PlusNovember 6, 2014 at 9:58 am #1474104Jerry, you might be right as rain, hope she tries what you suggested. I might add: for a short time, allow only the built-in Windows Firewall and Windows Defender – and try Legacy icon again. I wonder if other toys such as an active optimizer/whateverElse utility could cause the above problem?

AskWoody LoungerNovember 11, 2014 at 6:53 am #1474827I have had some astounding success getting an older program to run on Windows 8.1 by following a process called “Using Wait Chains and Task Manager in Windows 8”. It allows you to find the item/process that is causing things to “hang”, and can be found at the following link:
https://newsignature.com/articles/using-wait-chains-and-task-manager-in-windows-8Hope it helps.

Thanks for any ideas, and I apologize for posting here, but kind of desperate at the momentIf you absolutely cannot get it to run in Windows 8.1, there are two things you could try. In either case, you would first uninstall Legacy.
Try this first –> Reinstall Legacy in “compatibility” mode, picking an older version of Windows. Windows will then use the rules of that version of Windows, rather than using the rules of Windows 8.1.
If that didn’t work, try this –> Set up a virtual machine (e.g. Hyper-V or Oracle VirtualBox). This will tell you if you can use Hyper-V; with VirtualBox, you will need to install not only VirtualBox, but also an older version of Windows inside of VirtualBox. (In order to do this, you will need to have a copy of an older version of Windows available for the install.) Then install Legacy in the virtual machine.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 19, 2014 at 2:50 pm #1476160When you say “wouldn’t start, nothing”, were there any messages? I’ve seen lots of people get stuck in a rut where there’s an error message but they don’t share that because the error wasn’t the result they wanted.
If there are no errors or warning messages, then I recommend the following. This should get you some error information. Click Start | (My) Computer | (Right click) | Manage | System Tools | Event Viewer | Applications.
The log is sorted by date and you are looking for any Error or Warning events right at the time you tried to start your Legacy program. If you don’t find what you are looking for, branch out to look at the System and Security logs too, not just Applications.
I’m basically assuming that this program is locally installed. If it’s a web service instead and you are accessing Legacy using the Internet Explorer browser, there’s an IE event log as well.

Wait, you specified Windows 8.1. No Start menu. OK then, instead of Start, it’s Charms bar | Configuration | something something something!
Sorry, I’m not on a Win8 machine and can’t scout the command sequence, nor remember it exactly.
