    Hi,
A relative to me has some problems on one of his computers. I put this post in this forum since one of the issues is spyware related and the other two may or may not be related. First, I have not looked at his PC, just talked over phone and e-mail, so I don’t have a complete description of everything.

    The three issues are:
    1. When logging in, the folder “Program files” is open.
    2. A window with the file “Desktop.ini” is open.
    3. He has scanned the PC with MS AntiSpyware and it has said something about Gator. As I understand it he hasn’t been able to remove this, since it always comes back. I don’t know anything about Gator, but have read that it can be a real pain. Don’t know if there are different variants.

The number one issue is normally harmless. He has a Swedish OS and the correct folder is “C:Program”, not “C:Program files”. He has installed a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and I don’t know if there was some software that was installed in the wrong place.

Is it possible to completely remove this Gator thing with MS AntiSpyware, or do we need some other program. I know that for instance Spybot S & D is looking for Gator.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Regards,
    Argus

      Argus,
There is a free trial of a Gator removal tool at GatorRemove
Just go to the download page and get it. Good for 30 days.

If I recall correctly, Gator is an adware program that has been renamed WhenU. Not sure whether that will lead to any more tips.

If Explorer windows open at start-up, this can indicate that Windows was instructed to launch a program in that folder but could not find the program file. This might result from an incomplete or incorrect clean-up or uninstall. A tool like HijackThis can identify the programs that are supposed to run at start-up so you can check to see whether they exist (and whether you want them to run). Hope this helps.

I think your WhenU attribution is wrong, for Gator seemed to rename itself as Claria some time ago, and uses the acronym GAIN

Not that this helps to get rid of it!

You’re probably right. I get those AdWare companies all mixed up. smile

      Hi Argus,

If you don’t want to load another program to get rid of Gator, there are removal instructions here, here, here and from Symantec here. HTH smile
