After installing win2k, i tried to reinstall Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro version 1. In the Control Panel applet for game controllers, the ‘Status’ flips between OK and Not Connected. I checked the Dell site for new sound card drivers and came up empty.

    Any suggestions?

My first question would be, do you have the Service Pack installed, or any of the compatibility updates? How about DirectX 8?

What kind of sound card is intalled in the PC, also? If it’s a Creative Live! there are recent drivers available directly from their website.

And of course, you have surely checked your connections, making sure the card is firmly seated and that the cable is not loose…

Svc pack 1 for win2k, aye. DirectX 8, eh? No idea even how to find that out!

The sound card is Crystal Fusion – i’ve found no driver updates.

        connections surely checked, aye

Lesson Number 1 about OS upgrades.
Make SURE that ALL of your hardware and software is listed in the compatibility list before upgrading.

You did NOT state haw old your machine is but I know that Dell did NOT help much upfront with drivers.
Also a lot of Game type controlers were NOT included, Win2K was and is NOT a gamers OS.
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/upgra…pat/default.asp%5B/url%5D for the compatibility test and list.

yeah, well, ‘game’-anything was not the reason for my upgrade. i’m on win2k without a single crash since startup 8 months ago, it’s worth not having a few items, like games.

This machine is a Dell XPS R450, not THAT old.

Thanks for the reminder about h/w compatibility. Sidewinder is listed as compatible…

From the MSKB: For example, on a Microsoft Windows NT-based computer only the SideWinder Standard, and SideWinder 3D Pro are supported, and each of these game controllers require that Windows NT Service Pack 3 or later be installed on the computer.

end of story. thanks for the help!
