My manager is quizing me about the future of Access after Office 2003
– he’s been hearing rumours that Microsoft are going to drop Access, or at least replace the reporting component and replace with MSDE + a cut-down version of the SQL Server Reporting Services
– anyone got any knowledge on this ?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerOctober 6, 2005 at 3:10 pm #977362We’re thinking of replacing most of our Access apps (which are strictly simple screens to print reports) with SQL Reporting Services. However, it’s a bit of a struggle and there aren’t a lot of really helpful places out here to get answers. I’ve gone through tutorials on Microsoft, have read a few books, but when it gets down and dirty I have to experiment a lot. Hopefully, as more people use reporting services, it might be a new topic for the Lounge?

AskWoody_MVPOctober 9, 2005 at 9:52 am #977912SQL Reporting Services is supposed to be improved significantly in SQL Server 2005, but I’ve not had time to even play with it in the Beta. Essentially it is a web platform for users to print reports, and will certainly have its usages in web-based apps. If you are working strictly with SQL Server, and you want users to be able to create reports, at least the current version for 2000 presents some significant challenges. Some people have found Crystal Reports Enterprise Edition to be a more useful tool in that environment. Also note that you may encounter some SQL Server Licensing issues if you aren’t using site licensing.
