Fully underlined heading (2002 SP3)

I should like to create automatically numbered headings of the form:

Session 1 The First Session

Session 2 Another Session

But all I seem to manage to get are:

Session 1 The First Session

Session 2 Another Session

Is there any way to get a continuous underscore?

Hi Paul:
My initial impression is that you can’t, but I’ll look at it more in the morning. You can go to Bullets & Numbering, click on the appropriate ListTemplate & Customize…. Then, choose “More” & where it says “follow number with”, choose “nothing”. Then you can manually put in a tab in front of every heading, & have your heading style underlined, of course. Not a real satisfactory solution, however.

Hi Paul,

You can do this by omitting the space/tab that you have set to follow the heading number. You can then regain the space/tab and have it underlined by making it part of the heading itself.

I couldn’t find a way to put the tab in automatically. i.e. you have to start your heading text with a tab. Were you able to find a way to start it with a tab automatically?

Added: Even when I can put a tab in the Bullets & Numbering dialog box, it doesn’t follow through. See attached.

Hi Phil,

You’re correct in that, with my workaround you have to start the heading text with a tab (or space if that’s what you want). It ends up looking the same, except if you cross-reference it, including in a TOC.

What you need to do is insert ‘nothing’ as the character after and in the dialog box next to your Section 1, insert a non-breaking space with a dash and then another non-breaking space. To create a non-breaking space, use the key combinations Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar. These spaces are more commonly used to keep items from splitting across lines, i.e., October
20, 2004 – I would use the non-breaking space between October and 20. Because word reads them differently then a space, the underline appears under these characters. In the customize box of your Heading Level, ensure to click on Font and choose underline, same as with the text you will enter next to that level numbering (I suggest that you ensure you are using a style and then just update the style). See attached… hope this works for you… trish

I have had trouble updating the styles with “Session”. Whenever I do, as I start typing session, I get a message telling me that the document is too large and then word just hangs.

The only way that I have managed to add the Session is to format the text and then choose “Update to match selection”

In your document, you have used standard numbering instead of outline numbering. Standard numbering does not offer the option to follow the number with nothing, outline numbering does.

I have modified the document you attached to use outline numbering for the Heading 1 style, as described by Trish.

Thanks Hans, I knew I’d managed to get it looking almost good at one point, I must have chosed outline numbering then.

What is the difference between Standard and Outline numbering? I thought it was just that there was more than one level in an outline list.

Sure like to know why I get word hanging everytime I try to modify the number prefix directly in the style. The only think I can do after that is bring up the task manager and end the task.

As I say, changing the prefix “in situ” and then updating a style to match the selection works fine.

Outline numbering is a way to apply a hierarchical structure to your document. You can’t use standard numbering for that purpose.

I don’t know why modifying the number prefix in the style itself crashes your Word (it works ok for me in Word 2002 SP3), but numbering has always been one of Word’s weaker points.

Thanx for your help in my absence Hans! Paul… it greatly concerns me that your document is ‘crashing’… this usually means that it is about to become corrupt. If I were you (which I am not), I would copy the entire document, with the exception of the last paragraph marker (usually contains most of the corruption) and paste it into a new blank document. Be aware that the consequences of this action will require you to reformat the entire document; however, on the bright side, your document will not be corrupt! Before reformatting the document, I suggest that you read up on Outline Numbering and Style… I’m attaching an article which may help you figure this complex feature of Word! Enjoy… trish

My document currently has only 1 line in it. The problem occurs regardless of what document I am in. If I try to retype the preface text in Modify Style->Numbering then after typing a few characters word just hangs. It does not go not responding, but it does nothing else. I can adjust the format of the particular heading and then “Update to match” and then all is fine.

I would follow Hans’ suggestion and, if my memory serves me correctly, they talk about the Normal.dot (which is template all Word documents are based on). This file, Normal.dot, may be corrupt. If you have not customized Word you are safe to search for it on your C: drive and delete it, Word will recreate a new one the next time you open the program. If you have customized Word (toolbars, autotext, styles, etc.) you may want to see if there are other procedures in Hans’ document which you can follow…. trish
