    Hi,

    I have used two methods with FTP for years. The first and most common is the program FileZilla. It has worked flawlessly. The other method I use is windows explorer.

    Both methods have suddenly stopped working and I cannot find the reason for this.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

      What response do you get? When did it last work? One FTP server or many?

      Could it be FileZilla 3.10.0+ opting to use FTP over TLS if advertised as available? Connection failures if server is not configured properly for FTP over TLS

        My FTP is not working through FileZilla or Windows Explorer. I don’t have an exact time when it happened as I use it infrequently.
        I have tried to make it work by disabling the Firewall. It did not help. I also disabled my AV and still no luck.
        Everything else seems to working normally.

      You can test it locally by loading SmallFTPD and connecting to ftp://localhost via Explorer or FileZilla.
      http://smallftpd.sourceforge.net/

      Sorry it has taken so long for me to write back.

      I have tried to connect and receive the message that it has timed out.

      Have you tried running a local FTP server?
      Turn on logging in FileZilla and post the log here – minus user/pass etc. Edit > Settings > Logging.

      cheers, Paul

      A timeout literally means the FTP server didn’t respond, so your FTP software gave up. Thus, what means do you have to check that the FTP server is alive and not dead?

      Hints:

      1). You can ping the server. This is the usual first step;
      2). You can contact the administrator responsible for the FTP site. Step 1 is good but it only tells you that “a server” exists and can respond to an “Are you there?” inquiry. This does not tell you that the FTP server software is similarly alive;
      3). If the server and FTP server software are both OK, then possibly your FTP account has been shut off.
