Does Win XP Pro have a built-in FTP server? I want to share a 40Mb file with someone and email won’t handle it (ISP restriction).

Yes – as long as you install IIS, you can set up an FTP server. Installing IIS will add a MMC snap-in that will allow you to administer FTP services.

Yes, it has built-in Internet Information Services (IIS) with FTP service.

To install IIS, go to Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add/Remive Windows Components icon and check Internet Information Services.

To install FTP Server, you can download freeware or shareware program from TUCOWS.COM.

XP’s built in server is not really a built-in server, but a service to administer an FTP server, is that correct? And so is this why you would need to download and FTP server program?

No, it’s really an FTP server. The whole kit and caboodle. Working from a dial-up or high-speed access line in the home would be interesting though, since your IP address is almost always dynamically assigned and changes every time you log in. Thus, people trying to FTP in to your defined site (hosted on your system) would have to know what IP address you’ve been assigned. Setting up FTP services isn’t terribly hard, but you have never done it before it’s certainly not easy either. IIS includes excellent documentation on how to configure all of its various aspects.

Oh, okay…I had the impression from kaplinb that FTP server software was required and so that is why I asked.

The idea of hosting as a server from your local computer I didn’t know as possible….and a neat idea! Is this an uncommon set-up?

I wondered how one would connect with a dynamic IP. Is this tough to set up if one wants to share files with another when curtailed by an ISPs limits?

Most ISP’s will require a reason and there is a EXTRA charge for you to host a server. Also, most cable companies will close you down and refuse to provide any more service. So before you go looking, you need to check out what rules your provider has with you and servers.

Bruce and Dave: I know the thread is about FTP serving, but that wasn’t what I had in mind at all. Bruce, you used to do a little something like what I had in mind and, as I remember, you did it “by accident.” If you have “web page space” (a sufficient amount, as Mark reminded!) you create a publicly accessible folder(s) and put files in there that you want people to be able to download. Some of you might remember from the Coding and Scripting forum, that MarkJ helped me with a script to make that process a little easier and neater looking.

On MY web site, I have two such folders, one that’s private and requires a password and another that’s accessible to the public

Of course, in order to be able to do this, especially the password protected variety, your web host has to permit same.

Don’t know who your ISP is, but MANY of ’em these days give you some “free” web page space. If yours is in that boat, find out how to access it, use a free FTP client program, upload the file and tell whomever you’re trying to share the file with how to access the web space. Sure beats installing an FTP SERVER just to share a file with someone.

Al – don’t forget the potential gotcha: mahy of those free web deals give you a piddly amount (5-10MB) of space. Anything over that and yer stuck. Of course….you could always use WinRAR or WinZip or some such to split the file into smaller chunks.
