• FrontPage crashing (XP/SP-2)

I’m doing classes with ComputerPrep courseware. After installing Office SP-2, ALL computers (Windows 2000 and Windows XP) with the patch now crash consistently when pages are using themes and FrontPage navigation bars and we open a second page to edit or resize a frame. Typically, all I’m getting as an error is the “FrontPage has encountered a problem and needs to close” and under the technical information link in that error, it only gives “AppName: frontpg.exe AppVer: 10.0.2623.0 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000000ad.” The computers without SP-2 run these pages just fine. PWS, IIS or FP extensions do not seem to impact this problem, as different machines have had different configurations installed. Re-installing FP extensions or adding any additional patches to Office also has not fixed the problem. I’ve searched knowledgebase articles and MS boards, but have not come up with anything. I also have a call into ComputerPrep. I can generate this same error on any patched machine by creating a new web with the Corporate Presence or Project Web wizard in FrontPage — opening the first page in edit mode is fine, but opening a second page crashes FP. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Kathy

I am experiencing this same problem. Did you get it resolved? And, if so, how?

Your timing is coincidental! Yesterday, the network admin wiped one student computer and loaded Windows XP, IIS and all Windows patches. I just returned from the training building after loading Office XP from a network installation point with patches applied there, installing FrontPage, and drat if it isn’t still returning the same problems. I still suspect it has something to do with the Office patch in the mix. If I don’t have it solved before the next round of FrontPage classes in Oct., I’m going to wipe the machines and install Office XP without the patches.

        Good luck!

By any chance, is Office XP installed from a network administrative install point and FrontPage installed from a CD? I had the same problem repeatedly until I installed both Office and FrontPage from CD. I was able to install the patch without a problem, at that point.

            Becky,
I wanted to test the new installation before I replied to you. No, our installations of FrontPage and Office were both done from administrative installation points. The only way I’ve been able to fix this is to have the computer wiped, Windows reinstalled, and install both Office and FrontPage from CD’s. The exercises I had tried before are working now. At this point, I’ll skip the patches on the student computers.

            Thanks for your suggestion!!

It probably is the installing from a network install point, then. I can apply patches to my Office since both were installed from CD and I don’t have any problems with FrontPage. I understand your hesitancy in that area, though. wink
