I’ve used Fresh DOwnload for over a year, and am happy enough not to have bothered chasing alternatives. That is, it works but I won’t swear it’s the bees knees.

Drawbacks? First, you have to register to use it (name and email address). I always use my “junk mail” address for this type of rego, just in case. Second, they update it fairly frequently, and send you reminders to upgrade. I occasionally take notice of these. Third, the rego & upgrade process both take you though a couple of steps, and include a pop-up or two. Nuisance value only.

I’ve never used it, but I thought I’d pass it along: “For those not already acquainted with Fresh Download, this latest version of the well-known download manager will be worth checking out. Some of the primary features of the program include the ability to pause and resume broken downloads; the ability to use four simultaneous connections; and integration into Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. Additionally, users can schedule their downloads for low periods of Internet traffic. Finally, a FAQ section is also provided, as well as an email address where users can send questions about the program. Fresh Download 5.3 is compatible with all operating systems running Windows 95 and above.” (From The Scout Report, a weekly publication offering a selection of new and newly discovered Internet resources of interest to researchers and educators: http://scout.wisc.edu/report/sr/current/ [/url] .) (Often, interesting stuff even if you’re not a researcher or educator.)

I’ve also been using FreshDownload for some time, so here’s my 2cents. I use AvantBrowser for the majority of my surfing, and have found that it does not integrate perfectly with FreshDownload. With a plain IE browser, clicking a download link will launch FD and download, but with AB I have to copy the link and ‘Add’ it before FD will begin the download – only a small nuisance, but still a factor for consideration. The newest version seems to have a little trouble with it’s ‘Download all by FD’ context-menu option (though in fairness I have to say I upgraded both FD and AB in the same session, so I can’t say for sure that it is FD’s fault).

The registration drawbacks are not too serious, given a couple of tidbits of information. I used a Spamgourmet address to register and so far it has not been passed to anyone else. Second, once you do go to the Fresh Devices site and enter your registration information your browser flips over to their program download page. Bookmark this page and you won’t have to keep re-registering to download the newest releases. Third, when you register you receive codes for FreshDownload, FreshDiagnose, and FreshUI all at once, and these codes are good for all upgrades (so far); updating an existing installation doesn’t even require re-entering your code.

Edited by Diegol on Feb-09-2003– It’s not spam but Spyware Go!Zilla feeds on. Should sleep more often snore.

I’ve tried many download managers, to wit: DAP, GetRight, Mass Downloader, Fresh Download, maybe one or two more. But none of them has (at least I haven’t found one) a feature like GoZilla!’s Leech. It’s great for previewing the files stored in a web directory WITHOUT first having to download the page. You can then select which files you’d like to see, and it downloads. I believe that when it comes to fast downloading, either DAP, GetRight or Fresh Download itself should do (I wouldn’t have referred to FD, but in this post someone mentioned four simultaneous connections, which I think matches DAP and GR). Again, I’ve been using GoZilla! for quite a while (ver 3.5) and don’t know much of other apps’ latest changes. My use of them would only limit to install, check that there was no feature such as Leech, play a little bit, uninstall.
I’m aware of GZ’s censored SPYWARE machine, but it’s my only option so far. If you can recommend another prog, I’m all ears.

By the way… I won’t let any DL manager integrate with my browser. I’d rather copy the url address, then drop in the DLM to start downloading. Otherwise, I’ll use Window’s own DL interface (right click, save target as…). I found enabling browser integration troublesome at times.

        Have a nice weekend
