Had a PC given to me, a custom job built on a Gigabyte mobo. ATI video card and onboard sound weren’t working. Replaced the video card and installed new drivers for the sound card, everything working fine.

Windows wouldn’t pass the validation test, so I used the Microsoft site to buy a valid license key. Installed that and ran the SP2 install. Went fine, so I pulled the 2 128MB memory modules and installed a single 1GB module. Installed SP3, then kept running MS Update. Last run it installed 34 items, then I restarted the PC. Got the “Windows failed to start properly” screen. No matter whether I pick Start Normally, Use Last Known Good Configuration, or Safe Mode, the progress bar fills up left to right, then the PC freezes. Powered it down overnight, then tried again this morning with the same result. Any suggestions greatly appreciated .

What I have done in similar circumstances is to start the installation again, and take backups at key points so that I could revert if things went wrong.

I'll do that the NEXT time I'm doing major updates to Windows .

My only suggestion here, short of slipstreaming SP3 with the XP install disk and doing a clean install, would be to try a repair of the OS using the recovery console on the install CD.

When booting to safe mode, where does it stop (what driver)?
