AskWoody LoungerNovember 11, 2019 at 12:16 pm #2003468“Back in the day, if Windows 95 had sent out today’s Win10 telemetry, our 56K modem connections would have constantly ground to a standstill.”
This joke falls a bit flat because
- 56k modems weren’t introduced until well into 1998 (e.g. US Robotics Sportster x2/V.90)
- 56k upload speeds didn’t come around until the v.92 protocol was introduced in 1999, and a lot of internet service providers didn’t fully support it until 2000
Also, just for reference, the AskWoody home page — which is admirably small in size — would take about 90 seconds to download on a 56k modem.

AskWoody MVPNovember 11, 2019 at 12:40 pm #2003474Just a word of warning:
People who haven’t used/tried WPD before (new to the program/application)
This blocks a lot of sites associated with microsoft when using ‘3rd party block’ rules for the firewall. i.e. logging into outlook online
Be careful, if you can’t access a site, sure as heck it’s this programs firewall rulesets blocking an IP range or specific IP.Recently discussed this program/app and how to get it set-up over here
Windows - commercial by definition and now function...3 users thanked author for this post.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 11, 2019 at 8:03 pm #2003731I’ve been wondering what WPD stands for, but found no explanation here.
At first I thought it meant “Windows Privacy Detective” or “Windows Privacy Defender”.
But then I thought of googling for it (After 23 years computer use, this is still not my first reflex, but I’m getting there.)DuckDuckGo gave me: https://wpd.app/
So I conclude that WPD means “Windows Privacy Dashboard”.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 11, 2019 at 8:16 pm #2003734I went back to O&O’s ShutUp10 a few months back after using WPD for a while. Windows 10 Professional 64bit 1903.
The main reason was because WPD was causing one of the links in Settings (can’t remember if it was ‘System’ or ‘Apps’) to ‘crash’ back to the desktop when you clicked on it.
Don’t know if this has been fixed or not? I was looking for a way to contact the author(s) at the time to let them know but I couldn’t find one. Not an easy one, anyway.
