      Dennis,
Thanks for the freeware links. I quickly visited them and Fav marked them for future exploration. It’s always good to check out these sites, especially when someone has done the detective work to FIND them in the first place. clapping

I am relatively new to all this, do you know of any free programs that can run a scan on my machine and tell me if there is anything that is not right? Like the spyware and trojan??’s I have been reading about. I had a look at the sites you posted, they are terrific, but I dont know what I am looking for, can you suggest anything please?

For hunting down and eradicating spyware and such, most people here in the Lounge seem to like SpyBot Search & Destroy and AdAware and they’re both free

Thanks very much Big Al, good of you to put links there for me, I am already downloading. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, thanks Big Al. I just downloaded Spybot and I’m going to see what it can dig up my system. cheers

PS, sorry, I should say I have loaded already NAV 2003, cookiecop 2, and am about to grab the new zone alarm I just read about in here. Does this help you to help me? Many thanks. (sorry to sound so dumb)

BigAl’s suggestions are right on. You need to be aware, though, that Spybot is more aggressive. It may identify, as it cautions, that some entries are needed to keep other programs running. Also, I’ve discovered that some of the identified entries are innocuous. Run AdAware, and If you feel comfortable, run both, and be sure to download updates regularly if you go for the free versions. And no questions are dumb ones in the Lounge.

Thank you – I downloaded Spybot because it was 2mb, when I looked at Ad-ware it was over 10mb. I have the program Spybot but have yet to run the install, do you think it might be too difficult for me to understand being new?

            Jude,

AdAware is only a 1.45 MB download not 10 MB.

            Have a look at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/%5B/url%5D

Sorry, dont know why I thought it was 10 mgs, anyway I have downloaded both spyware and now adware, thank you for the link. I installed Zone Alarm 3 but it kept causing problems, which is why I have been offline for a few days. Every time I booted ZA told me I had error’s, it did log 2 sites with only 0’s as the IP, but I could not seem to delete them. Ended up uninstalling it, but will try again because I would like to feel protected. Thank you very much for the help, I will keep on trying to have the firewall up and running before installing adware. ๐Ÿ™‚

In deciding whether or not to “destroy” in SpyBot, you’re safe in deleting items identified as “tracking cookie or cookie of tracking site.” On other items, clicking the checkmarked box will give you more information that should help you decide whether or not to delete it.
