This is somewhat off topic since it’s not software. I’ve been using Driveway for a free website where I can save files. They’ve just announced that they’re discontinuing the service.

Does anyone know of a free website where they do NOT give out your email address, send mailings or use spyware? Alternatively, does anyone know of an innexpensive website that will NOT give out your email address, send mailings, or use spyware?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding. Do you get any spam or have you been able to “opt out” sucessfully?

I’ve been using xDrive I’ve had very little spam as a result, although I do have tons of filters on my 5-year-old e-mail address…

          Drk.

        Hi Edward
I couldn’t send this via email, as you have the option to send private mail unchecked in your profile. When you put a link in a post, could you please make it ‘live’ (clickable) using the Tag Panel or the ‘url’ tag? This way, http://www.freedrive.com becomes
http://www.freedrive.com, which makes it a whole lot more convenient for your readers.
        Cheers.

        Hi Phil
I use both X-Drive and Freedrive as On-Line Storage sites (you get around 50Mb free for starters). It’s a brilliant way of not only storing files, but sharing them within your own private ‘Ring’. It also has helped me out when I needed a couple of vital executables, and the firewall at work would not let them through as e-mail attachments.
With a permanent broadband connection you could in theory have only a tiny HDD on your local system, and store all your files off-site.
OLS : one of the better ideas to come out of the net. As you may have gathered, I’m a believer…

          Hi Mel:

Do you like xdrive or freedrive better? Are you concerned with either’s privacy policy (I take it you’re not or you wouldn’t use it)? Thanks.

            Hi Phil
To be of any use to clients, OLS providers have to make sure their security is 100% watertight. I’m fairly sure data on their servers is as safe as say, in a safety-deposit box. I say this because their commercial service has to be like this, or invasion of a client’s private data would open them to endless litigation should it be discovered. I assume such security would be part and parcel of their freebie as well.
I like XDrive, for purely personal, rather than functional reasons. I have it working under Win2k as though it were another hard drive partition (once on line, that is). I also understand that Freedrive have restricted their ‘private sharing’ of files as some LJSs were using it to exchange illegal copies of games software (LJSs=Long John Silvers). These are by no means the only two : http://www.myspace.com might be worth a look. As I have said, OLS is not only an brilliant (commercial) idea, but is of unlimited use. It has saved my as* on more than one occasion. Since they are all free, sign up to as many as you like – they do not bombard you with spam (as far as I can tell). The junk goes to my Hotmail address anyway, which is plagued by the stuff – but its nature suggests it does not come from the OLS people directly. Of course, they may sell-on your details….

You can also get a free web site and store your files there. They do NOT have to be used on a web page to be stored.
I have a free web page at Rootsweb and I have a folder that I store files in. You can use the Rootsweb provided file transfer program or you can use any other type of FTP program. I use WS_FTP Pro. by the way this site has unlimited web space.

        Hi Dave:

I stopped by the Rootsweb site. I have a question. One of their conditions for getting a free page is that you NOT store any files. It specifically says no mp3, zip, etc. Is this something new or is it a problem?

What I’m looking for, BTW, is a place where I can store files privately and have a public storage, where I can give people a password to get to that area. That’s the way Driveway worked. Does Rootsweb work this way?

        Thanks,

Your right, they do NOT want you to do that.
On the Old Lounge someone had posted a Templates folder at Freedrive and it work quite good.

Thanks to everyone that applied. I signed up for x-drive & freedrive. Freedrive does not let you opt out of getting mailings. The only way to opt out is to close the account.

            Here’s what they said:
            [indent]

If you opt-out of mailings, you will not have a FreeDrive account and your e-mail address will not be given to YesMail. The only way to not receive mail from us is to delete your account. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

So, I had to give a name, address, & email address. I have a web email account so I’ll use that for spam.

Thanks again for all the information. This Lounge is really a great source for everything.

At http://www.idrive.com, you can designate certain files or folders as shared, and anyone who knows your username can see those files. They also have the software that lets you treat your storage as Web-Folders.

          • #518243

            Hi Tegan:

Thank you very much for that information. That’s another storage site that I can use now.

            Cheers,

            …agree. I signed up as well…

Doesn’t earthlink give you a home page?
      Most ISPs do these daze.

      • #516446

        Hi Howard:

They do. But it’s only 5 or 10 MB–not really enough to store files.

      • #516504

Also, Earthlink’s Webpage servers tend to flake out from time to time…

        Drk.
