FP XP and DIV (2002)

Hello.
I am a newbie when it comes to creating and editing web pages. I do okay, using Front Page XP when the site has FP extensions enabled. But my free, personal web space from Verizon does not allow direct editing with FP, so I use a combination of Word (XP) and FP (XP) to create the page.
Why? Because with Word, I can control the content better, and then with FP, I can copy/paste the content from Word, and keep my free (Bravenet) hit counter intact, so that it continues to increment, rather than restart every week, when I change the content.
It’s a silly joke site that I call The Humor Mill. I created it so that I wouldn’t keep clogging up my friends’ in-boxes with jokes, only with the URL each week. Location: http://members.bellatlantic.net/~alexh1/
What I need to learn how to do is manage the display. When I visit the site, and View Source, I can see DIV statements that set the size way too high, such that my friends complain about having to scroll – horizontally – to read the ends of lines of text.
However, when I create the page, Word does not show these DIV statements; nor does FP. Here is the line:

And so, my question is how do I remove that simple line which contains the DIV statement, so that the site scales to each person’s browser? Even if it is the last thing I do before FTPing the page up to my site, I’m willing to do it.
For me, if Verizon would only enable FP extensions, this would all be moot, and I could continue on to learn how to create a site with multiple pages .

i like to use Word as an editor too, but copying text into FP drags a bunch of formatting with it. To avoid that, i select all in Word, copy and paste it into Notepad first, then copy and paste it from Notepad into FP. There may be a faster way, but this works for me.

You also might want to turn on the ‘Tags’ – i cant remember the MS name – Magic Tabs or something – that allow you to select the format used when you paste.

Maybe that’s why I cannot get FP’s paragraph formatting to work. Once I paste from Word, the paragraphs get different spacing than when in Word, and FP gives me no options on changing that formatting.

So Notepad will ‘clean out’ the text, and leave it raw for FP? Interesting. I’ll certainly try that this weekend.

Do you mean Smart Tags? I’d beta tested Office XP, and never really understood the benefit of those things, or how to properly use them. Thankfully, there were thousands of other beta testers, most of whom understood them, to send bug reports .

Or do you mean, when pasting into FP, using the Paste Special that appears in Word itself?

A colleague told me to learn to use Notepad for the whole thing. I guess, if I intended to be a really good web designer, I probably would; I just want to do this as a fun thing. My other web site allows FP extensions, and I use FP to edit it directly, when I do change it – which isn’t all that often.

This thing is a weekly, but the hosting is free from Verizon, along with my DSL account, so I don’t intend to make it my life’s work; just a place to pass along all those jokes I get in email.

The Windows clipboard works in mysterious ways. I believe that when you copy text in Word, Windows stores a variety of different formats, so that different applications can use different formats based on their capabilities. Notepad only understands plain text, so by virtue of its lack of sophistication, you only end up with plain text. FrontPage, on the other hand, is conversant with Office-specific tags, so pasting directly from Word creates a mess.

Yes, smart tags. When i copy from word and paste into FP, there’s a little clipboard icon that appears with a down arrow. The tooltip is ‘paste options’, of which you get three. i don’t find any way to turn these things off, so you should be seeing them too. You want to use the options available in FP, not in Word.

Doing an entire website with Notepad is a waste of time.

We just upgraded to Office XP and I use FP2000. I’ve had problems using Word XP with cutting and pasting into FP and getting all sorts of extraneous formatted HTML code. Cutting and pasting into Notepad and then copying that into FP does provide ‘clean’ code but you lose all formatting. In experimenting I found out that you can cut and paste from Word XP into FP by using the ‘Edit/Paste Special/Normal paragraphs with line breaks’ option in FP. You will lose any special Word specific formatting but you’ll get cleaner code. The only way Word Xp will give you cleaner code is to do a ‘File/Save As/Save as type/Web Page, Filtered’. The code is cleaner but NOT CLEAN.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I did it this way:
Opened email message(s)
Copied out joke(s)
Pasted them into Notepad
Copied and pasted the whole thing into Front Page XP
Applied the desired formatting in FP
FTP’d the thing up to the site

And that solved the problem of people having to scroll – horizontally – to see the end of each line. Using Notepad, as suggested, did indeed allow me to not worry about the DIV statement which made it necessary to scroll, to see the end of each line. And it allowed me to use PF’s formatting.
