Foxit Reader New Version?

CNET download.com stated in an email that there was a new verion for Foxit Reader, version 3.1.1. 0928. I use the free version which is version 3.0.2009.1817.

I went to Foxit’s website and there was a download link with no mention of the version.

If anyone uses Foxit Reader (free), please tell me what is the lates version, and if I should download it from CNET or Foxit?

You can check from within Foxit Reader itself:

You’ll see the update at the bottom of the list:

Select it, click Add, then click Install.

Well, if you click on the download link in FoxitSoftware.com it takes you to the CNET download web page for Foxit Reader 3.1.1.0928…!

I would be very careful with your installation and choose Custom, then untick options to prevent it installing quantities of rubbish, such as a Foxit Toolbar, links to eBay, makes Ask your default search engine, and changes your home page to Foxit Reader, and the like.

Almost makes you want to choose Adobe Reader! (Oh, but it installs Acrobat.com, Air, and so on – and doesn’t give you the option of NOT installing these…)

Gloria already has Foxit Reader installed, so she doesn’t need to download and run the full installation.

Yes, that is very annoying.

(But as you point out it’s not as bad as Adobe – the enforced installation of Acrobat.com etc. was what finally caused me to switch from Acrobat Reader to Foxit Reader.)

And are there any downsides to using Foxit reader as the default? What happens for example if you click on a link to a PDF on a web page. Does it open in a browser window like Adobe Reader would?

I haven’t found any. Is starts quickly and displays PDF files correctly as far as I can tell. I haven’t tried out all the bells and whistles because I use it only to view and print PDF files.

Yes, it opens in a browser window or tab, depending on your browser and settings. The Preferences dialog has a check box “Display PDF in browser”.

Yes, it opens in a browser window or tab, depending on your browser and settings. The Preferences dialog has a check box “Display PDF in browser”.

I’ve set Foxit Reader as my default PDF file reader, and if I double click on a PDF file on my computer, it opens in Foxit. And I have checked the box “Display PDF in browser”. But in all 3 browsers I have Opera (my default browser), Firefox and IE8, PDF files on webpages still open with Adobe Reader. I must be missing something.

Edited to add: actually, no, after a restart, IE opens them with Foxit, but Firefox and Opera still use Adobe. I suppose I must need plugins?

If I remember correctly, I was given the option to include the Foxit Plugin for Mozilla when I installed Foxit Reader. I did, and PDF files open in a browser tab in Firefox 3.5.

The Reader for Firefox is installed. Will it automatically be upgraded to the updated version?

If you look at the second screenshot in post #2 higher up in this topic, you’ll see that the list of updates includes “Firefox plugin”.
If you see this entry too, you can update to the latest version by selecting “Firefox plugin”, then clicking “Add” and finally “Install”.

I didn’t see the update for the Firefox plugin. I hope I didn’t miss it but I don’t think so, I examined the list very closely.

That’s not a problem – it means that you already have the latest version, so you don’t need to update!

Thanks for the warning. In view of your post, I don’t think I want the new version. The options that get installed with no way to NOT install has caused me to come to that decision. I’m getting so tired of programs trying to force users to install things they don’t want. Especially Foxit Reader that give you no way to opt out.

I’ll continue using the version I have thank you.

I did have the Reader (version 3.0 (build 1817). I took your advice and installed the update (version 3.1.1. (build 0928) from within the Reader. There were other options to install, I only chose the upgrade. It installed so quietly I thought at first I’d lost it.

Please consider this problem solved.
