an xls is exported by a 3rd party app. Open said xls in v 2003. Panes frozen at a2. Column labels. Row 1 background color = yellow. AutoFilter On.

    Turn off autofilter.

When i insert a new column b, and type ‘=Trim(a2)’, the formula is not evaluated. It just lies there. Delete the new B.

When I insert a column to the left of A and enter ‘=Trim(b2)’, the formula is evaluated.

What is it about the imported range that would prevent formulae from being evaluated?

It sounds like the new column B is formatted as text. When you insert the new column B, select the column and change the format to “General” before you enter the formula.
