In Win 2000, after formatting a 3 1/2 disk, the usual statistics display of sectors, size etc. no longer appears, as it did in previous win versions. there is not even a check box to request this. Am I missing something really obvious??

There is no pop-up window after floppy formatting in Win2k; it supposed to remind you that there is no DOS mode supported. You can check floppy statistics by typing
      chkdsk a:
at the command prompt. By the way, you can’t create a bottable diskette in Win2k, unless you use the floppy image created for this.

…and if you want to know how to do this (if for example, you have no ‘back-up set’ at the moment) get the CleanBoot doc from my web site (go to Index).

yikes I can barely remember the last time I used a floppy. Ever since I got a zip drive and a CD burner, floppies have become pretty useless.

        ..and an iMac presumably?

How are you intending to get into your system if ever you need to perform a clean reboot and your CD won’t read? Where do you load your CD ROM drivers from if you lose support? There’s alot to be said for treading the knife-edge – just hope you don’t fall off.

I was speaking in terms of storage. Floppies have become useless in that respect. I haven’t removed the floppy drive from my system or anything crazy like that. The only time I can think I might need a floppy is the situations you describe.

          cheers

…ah, right. There I would agree. One should never trust vital data to a floppy as the sole medium. I have had some that have kept it for years, but equally have had some nasty surprises. Mind you, I could say that about CD-RWs as well.
            That knife-edge now becomes the yellow-brick road…

            Cheers
