• Form fields and bullets (Word 97 SR2)

    OK, thinking caps on.
Word document has been created with form field. The form field (having bookmark name, I’ll call it Text1) is cross referenced later in the document. The Form field is formatted with a number bullet and as the user enters text and hard returns, the form field expands complete with bullets.
Further on in the document, the cross reference to the form field book mark text, is also shown with bullets inherited I believe from the original form field.
I want to have the cross reference bullets restart at 1, but no matter what I do, the bullet numbers go somewhat loopy.
I attach a sample doc to see the problem.
The cross reference has been formatted with number bullet to restart numbering.
Unprotect and protect the form to reset the form field.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA

Putting the switch * Mergeformat on the ref field seems to do the trick.

I tried the Ref Text1*Mergeformat but when I entered the form field and updated I was left with the cross reference bulleted as 1;4;2 (when using three bullets as the form field).
        Copy doc attached.
Any other suggestions or is there a particular setting I am not using that flips the bullets.?
        TIA

          Oh dear!

This is strangely reminiscent of the discussion following post 134810 and post 135177.

The solution in that case was to use * Charformat, but I tried this and it doesn’t seem to work with the bullets – that are a paragraph rather than a character format.

Maybe someone cleverer than I can help you.

You are pushing the boundaries of the software here but I think it can be controlled by macros and styles in your document. I applied one of my templates to the doc so I could use my macros and it appears to do the job.

Have a look at the file I have attached and let me know if it is doing what you require. If it works for you then I will provide the info you need to set your files up.

        Andrew,
I have tried the file and it appears to be working fine. A workaround I was planning to use was to have the user not type over the final full stop (or character) of the form field and it then seems to obey the update without changing the bullet numbers. But your version seems infinitely more user friendly. If you could post the solution I’d much appreciate it.
        Thanks

btw, if the cross reference bullets in the original file are change to bullets and not numbers, then you get a weird pseudonumberbullet result, ie, bullet, bullet, number, bullet, bullet
