AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2002 at 3:03 pm #570331I have a user who has to work with a file that was password protected (within Excel 2000) by a previous employee. I was so glad to see that there was already a thread on this topic.
I did go and download the “add-in” that you suggested. I went into Tools, Add-ins and selected it. How do I get it to work? Obviously, I can’t open the file I need because of the password and I can’t seem to figure out how to make the add-in look at the file.
I appreciate any help you can provide!
(Happy Valentine’s Day)

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2002 at 3:19 pm #570338I’m using XL97, but this should work. You don’t need to have the protected file open. In Tools, Add-Ins, make sure “EDC Tool Template” is checked; if not check and click OK. You will then have a menu item called “EDC Tools”. Use the EDC Tools menu option Find Password In, A Protected Workbook …, browse to the WB. Good luck; if the WB is protected at the Open level with a long password, it may take a LOOOOOOOONG time.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2002 at 9:38 pm #570475Hi Loretta,
When I installed this tool, I had a new menu heading to the right of the Help menu, this is called EDC tools. When I click on this a drop down menu gives me the option to either look at the active workbook, or a protected workbook. If I select the protected workbook option, I can then browse to the file to select the culprit..
Do you have this EDC menu option on your menu bar? If not then perhaps the tool has not installed correctly?
On my PC the EDC Password Tool.xla is installed in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeLibrary directory, can you do a search to see where yours is, or if it is on your PC.
Let me know if these clues help you out, or if there is some other problem.
Hope you had a great Valentines day alsoI have eldest granddaughter’s birthday, the big 5 today, so she is off to school on Monday

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 15, 2002 at 3:44 pm #570599Thanks to both of you for the help! I simply didn’t think to look at the menu bar!
Boy, you weren’t kidding about it taking a LOOOONG time. I’ve started the process and hope to have good results by Monday!(The password was created by a verified schizophrenic previous employee. So, guessing isn’t even appropriate on this one!) Thanks again.
P.S. I just love having this resource available!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 19, 2002 at 4:06 pm #571326No, I didn’t. It seems that the systems folks decided to remotely play with our PCs over the weekend and restarted my PC. We’ve since decided not to worry about the information in the file – it’s probably inaccurate anyway. It would probably take us longer to verify what’s in the file than to simply start over from scratch!
