I ran across something very odd after editing the Footnote Continuation Notice.

In a memo I was doing, I had some footnotes that continued from page to page, so I added a “(continued…)” message in the Footnote Continuation Notice. But once I added this message, our firm logo on the first page of the memo would not print. The logo still showed up in Print Preview, but it would not print. I tried another printer — same result.

I have attached the document. I have replaced our firm logo with a typewritten logo “FIRM LOGO”. It appears in a graphics box in the First Page Header.

Try printing the first page before you do anything to the document. The “FIRM LOGO” should print fine. Then go into the Footnote Continuation Notice and add “(continued…)”. (I like to right-flush that message, but the problem occurs whether you left-flush it or right-flush it.) Now print page 1 again. Every time I try this, “FIRM LOGO” does not print even though it is still there in Print Preview.

    Any idea what’s going on?

It works okay in Word 2002, so I guess someone with Word 2000 will need to delve into it…

What SR/SP are you up to?

        We’re using Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) on Windows 2000 Professional, Version 5.0.2195, Service Pack 3, Build 2195.

Thanks to all for your replies.

      Hi Russ,

Works for me with Word2000 on Win 2000. It even worked when I replaced with “FIRM LOGO” text box with a graphic.
(I didn’t have a Greenberg Glusker image, so I used one of my own).

      Cheers

I tried it in Word 97 SR-2 on Windows NT4 and in Word 2002 SP-2 on Windows XP Pro, with the same networked printer. I don’t have Word 2000.

The “logo” was not printed in Word 97, but it was in Word 2002. I experimented with the position and the anchor of the text box in Word 97, without result.

      Hi Russ:
Using Win 98SE, Word 2000 SP-3, & an HP Laserjet 5P printer. Well, I can reproduce the problem.

      If I:
      1. Change to normal view.
      2. Visit the footnotes pane.
      3. Change to Footnote continuation notice, even WITHOUT making any changes.

The FIRM LOGO graphic no longer prints.

However, I haven’t figured out why. I made sure that I was printing drawing objects, tried with & without updating fields, with & without background printing. Furthermore, even without making changes & undoing all changes, (except printing automatically causes repagination), I could no longer print the logo. Also, if I closed the document, saving changes, the logo no longer printed. If I closed the document without saving changes, I could print the logo again.

So it appears that merely visiting that box causes the logo not to print. Very strange.
