Whichever route I use, all my attempts to open the ‘footnote and endnote dialog box’ in Word 2010 land me with simply a new inserted footnote. Can anyone clarify?

If your document has only one page, footnotes and endnotes will be added to that page. End notes will be added immediately after the body text; footnotes will appear just above the page footer.

sorry–that’s not the problem. It’s as though whatever code opens the ‘footnote and endnote dialog box’ is somehow dead, and instead we get a new footnote. It’s very weird.

In that case, try repairing Word (via Programs & Features in the Windows Control Panel). See also:

I had this problem and the answer is to put word into draft mode and then show all footnotes. Open the dropdown box and customise the footnmotes.

Somehow I doubt that will address the OP’s problem, which concerned a faulty footnotes tab on the Ribbon. In such cases, the most likely culprit is a faulty ‘BuildingBlocks.dotx’ file.

Just to be clear, is it possible you’re clicking the wrong button? Are you clicking the little arrow in the lower right corner of the Footnotes Group?

This screenshot is from Word 2010, but it’s the same function in 2007.

      Thought I’d ask… Kim

Of course, if you’re already in the footnote area of a document, you can’t insert an endnote – the option is greyed out. For some, reason, the Insert Footnote option isn’t greyed out in that scenario.
