I have several hundred documents that have an If statement for the footer which I would like to auto replace with a new If statement that will include a link to a master footer template which includes logos as part of the new footer.

I have worked out how to do the if statement to link to the new template document.but now I need help with replacing the content of the existing footer with the new if statement.

Is there an automatic way of updating this or would I have to open and replace the footer for each document.

    Any help is greatfully received.

You’ll have to open each document in turn to replace the footer. You could write a macro to loop through all files in a folder or a set of folders, open each document in the folder and replace the footer, then save and close the document.

Alternatively, you could create an AutoOpen macro in your Normal.dot. This macro will run whenever you open an existing document.
The macro could check whether the footer needs to be updated and if so, perform the replacement.

        Thanks for the advice Hans

It looks like I am going to be opening and closing a lot of documents grin
