Does anyone know which fonts are absolutely essential to a basic Win 7 & MS Office 2007 setup ???

I have recently transitioned from Win XP and some of these Win 7 issues have me stumped. When I checked out my system, I found approximately 200 fonts installed, most of which had very wierd (to me) names such as : @BatangChe, Aparajita, DocChampa, Lao UI, etc.

What fonts can I safely delete and/or which ones are necessary???

Windows 7 installs on an International basis. This means that most of the components are the same no matter what the interface language. This includes fonts.

This thread goes a fair bit away from your question, but hopefully gives you a start in sorting out which fonts you can safely remove.

My question still remains ….. For Windows 7, what fonts can I safely delete and/or which ones are absolutely necessary???

I suggest that you begin by removing fonts that ‘look’ like you will not need/want by putting them into a zip file or out-of-the-way folder for a while while you use your system. If after a reasonable amount of time you have no problems, put them on a CD and store somewhere. This way they will be available if you ever want/need to restore them.

There is NO need in removing any fonts unless one is running out of disk space, but, then you will NOT save much space by removing a font.

I have over 650, and they all came with Windows or a program that I installed. I know that Windows comes with about 135, Office comes with a load of others and most graphics programs come with some.

So what are you going to do, as many programs add them, delete any of the new ones that you do not want at that time?

I don’t worry about fonts affecting performance under Win 7. My impression is that just having fonts in my Windowsfonts folder does not affect Win 7 performance much, with the possible exception of load times. Most font files are larger than ever and there are more of them than ever, but modern drives are bigger and faster and computers more powerful. They can be a nuisance because too many appear in the Office 2007 font windows, and the profusion of multilingual fonts is confusing.

I don’t mind having a lot when it comes to keeping fonts, although ‘several’ is enough to use in a single document or publication, and it is a good idea to learn to use several well rather than dabble in too many. There is nothing wrong with keeping a variety available, because many are special-purpose fonts that you may one day be glad you have. Fonts can be extremely expensive if you have to go out and purchase them, so why throw them away? While you are planning to eliminate fonts from your setup, I think the majority who have migrated to Win 7 should check for fonts that may have been lost in the migration, especially if they are desirable OpenType fonts which they may have already used in documents or templates. How many users compare their old font folder with the new to see if any are missing?
