A minor caution; Consolas lacks the ASCII line drawing characters. Only an issue if you’re an avid user of the “tree” commmand (or use shocked DOS applications!).

(Edited by joeperez on 20-May-08 08:53. fixed download link)

You can download the Consolas font samples from Microsoft Typography – ClearType Font Collection. If you have Vista or Office 2007 this font is already installed. Then see IEBlog : Give Your Eyes a Treat for instructions on using it in the command line.

You may download the font from: Download details: Consolas Font Pack

Thanks for that, Joe – but I have two problems:

        1. I can’t get any of the files on the webpage to open with the XPS document viewer
        2. then the XPS Essentials Package when downloaded fails to install!

Also, my understanding is that if you don’t already have the Consolas font you would have to obtain it (perhaps using Woody’s method in a recent Windows Secrets newsletter). Do those XPS files to which you point really contain installable fonts?

Consolas looks to me very like Andalé Mono from the old Microsoft TrueType Core Fonts for the Web collection (but monospaced fonts will inevitably look fairly similar!).

        Later… I note that there’s a download for the Consolas font family (4.3 MB)…

Even later.. to TimOz: the line-draw characters are not present in Lucida Console, either. You’d need the ‘raster’ fonts if you want to use Tree (not a program I’ve used for about 20 years, and I spend much of my time in the Command Prompt window).

        BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

1.) I’ve not had any problems with viewing XPS files. I am running Vista Business though.
2.) Do you have all the other required software installed? I don’t trust the installer to download and install other required software correctly.

Oops on the XPS files. Those are just samples of the fonts. I should’ve put the font download link in my post. I will edit it and add it. Thanks.
