Folder View Not Sticky for Drive D (internal zip) (Home)

I am trying to change the folder view in my internal zip drive (D:) from big icons to details. It changes, but as soon as I move out of that folder, it changes back.

I do not want this view in all my folders, so I haven’t tried clicking “apply this to all folders”, but I have tried setting it both in Windows Explorer, and opening the drive from My Computer, as well as from a desktop shortcut.

This is true even though I have the same disk in there and am not taking it out between times. Any other folders or drives where I have made this change have stuck just fine.
Any clues?

Well, I’m going to suggest something you can try, that as far as I know is not dangerous, except that you have to run REGEDIT and delete two registry keys. I first stumbled on this about a year ago concerning the topic of XP not remembering settings. It has worked for a number of people concerning window sizes and placement, status bar, icons v. details, etc. etc. It’s still a mystery as to why and for exactly which problems it will or won’t work, but…..

Run REGEDIT and work you way down to export and then delete the following two keys: (export if you’re nervous. I don’t bother – see below)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRoamBagMRU]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRoamBags]

This may then require that you set other things again, besides your zip drive question. But XP will re-create the two keys and save settings from that point onward. Don’t know for sure in your case, but…..

I guess I asked this question at the perfect time. We are most likely going to wipe the system and reinstall it next weekend. So I can try your fix this week and if it turns out it IS dangerous, nothing lost! I have no data on this computer yet at all, other than things installed directly from disks. Fun to be able to play without worrying too much.

I charged my way into Regedit this evening. It didn’t work quite like we thought it would, but I think the problem is sort of solved. Here is what happened:

I went to Start>run – typed in regedit, hit “enter”.
I didn’t find the export thing you were talking about – regedit just popped up with an explorer-like window which included folders that were just exactly the ones you described that I should delete. I found “export” in the drop-down file menu. Just for giggles I exported the registry to the E drive (partition). Then I deleted those two folders and restarted the computer. It didn’t seem to make any difference. The folder view was still not sticky.

I ran regedit again and saw that the keys had not been recreated.

Then I tried asking it to change ALL the folder views (tools >folder options). After that, it stuck. I went back to regedit and the keys had been recreated like you said they would. But the D drive is now permanently changed to detail view. It still isn’t sticky if I want to change it. I DON’T want to change it – and since that is my preferred view for most folders and changed settings seem to be sticky in every other folder, this works. But that setting is apparently still not working as it should.

My problem seems to be adequately solved, nonetheless. And I’ve had my first adventure into regedit!

You might want to DELETE that exported copy of the registry if you didn’t have a problem. If you exported the entire registry, it could be a pretty good size file.

Big Al,
I am having problems with XP and the Office applications regarding folder views not “sticking” as well. What I wanted to know is if your solution could also solve my problem. I will state my problem below and hope you don’t mind if this appears on this post.

I am having problems with the views within the folders for XP and Office Applications. First I need to have each folder view by Details (no problem there) then I need to have each Office application open to my root folders (directory) in my case it is G: sorted my Name with the folders being displayed first. Then when I click on a sub-folder, the view should be by Date with the most recent files being displayed on top. Again I can obtain those views by clicking on the Details menu. My problem is to have each view stay that way once I close the application then re-open or open another application. It appears that the last view (by date, ascending order) is what I see when either re-opening the application or opening another Office application.
