• Floppy drive not working? (Win XP OEM)

Have recently purchased a new machine with WIN XP OEM installed.

While the system appears to recognise the floppy drive, as thru control panel it shows that a drive and controller are installed, when I put a disk in the drive the system tells me that either the disk is not formatted and would I like to format it, or that the disk is damaged and can not be formatted.

I have tried uninstalling both drive and controller and reinstalling, just the same.

    Anyone any clues?

Take another diskette, format and check it with Scandisk – surface scan on another computer if you can, and try to access it from WinXP. If you’ll get the same message, your floppy drive is bad (yes, it is possible!)
In this case, contact your computer distributor/manufacturer for replacing.

        Thanks for that.

I haven’t tried scanning a new disk but have tried formatting on another machine, Win 98, and trying to read. No success.

I think you may be right, I should go back to the supplier. censored

You might also check to see if any of the cables come loose during shipment. This has been known to happen and can give you this type of message. Also if you have been inside, to check things out, you may have bumped the cables.

Thanks Dave. The first thing I checked.

I have spoken with the manufacturer they now tell me this is a know fault. censored
