I have a Sandisk Cruzer mini 4.0GB flash drive. I also have access to two other computers beside my desktop, one is running XP sp2, the other is Win 2000. Both other computers recognize the flash drive, my desktop does not. I called San disk., they suggested that I remove all usb entries from the hardware section of the device manager. I did. No success. I went so far as to reformat, re-install windows xp up to SP2. same results. The computer does not recognize the flash drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerJune 8, 2006 at 12:21 am #1015331There are several things which can make your flash drive “invisible” in Windows Explorer.
– Connect your flash drive to the computer
– Open Computer Management window (click Start | Run, type COMPMGMT.MSC and hit Enter).
– Navigate to Storage > Disk Management on the left pane, scroll down lower right pane until you see your flash drive.
– Check the partition description (it must be “Healthy”) and a drive letter assigned. The most common cause is: the drive letter assigned for the drive is already used by network drive. If so, right-click flash drive partition and from pop-up menu choose “Change Drive Letter and Path”, then in the next window click Change button and select any available letter. Sometimes drive letter is not assigned (on Server 2003 machines, for instance). In that case, in Change Drive Letter and Path window click Add button and select any letter available. Please post the results.

AskWoody LoungerJune 8, 2006 at 6:48 pm #1015428That means your computer does not have USB2 controllers (which are required to access 4GB flash drive) or USB2 controller does not configured properly. Open Device Manager (click Start | Run, type DEVMGMT.MSC and hit Enter). Navigate to “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” and expand it. Do you see any errors (yellow or red signs)? Do you see a device which has word “Enhanced” in its name (for example, “Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller – 24CD”)?
If not, you have to acquire USB2 card (for instance, something like http://www.buyextras.com/bus5porusb20.html%5B/url%5D), install it and connect your 4 GB flash drive into it.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 28, 2007 at 2:49 pm #1058214To prevent this from happening, one should assign drive letters from the other end of the alphabet such s “RSTUVXYZ”. Then you will not likely to have a mapped drive be taken over by a local piece of hardware.
