Flagging contacts and e-mails (2000)

I have flagged several contacts and e-mail messages. My assumption is that when the magic date and time comes a window will pop up reminding me to follow up. This doesn’t happen (although I think I recall this happening before). I do get reminders on appointments and tasks, but not these. Am I right in assuming that I should get reminders when I flag contacts and messages? If so, how do I get Outlook to do this?

Thanks for the insights. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but it gave me some idea of why it was happening sometime and not others.
