Fixes for network access and sharing issues

    By Fred Langa

Sometimes, Windows’ network and file-sharing settings get royally messed up, making access and sharing impossible. Here are some fixes. Plus: More on relocating default folders, avoiding cloud-encryption “back doors,” and a new Windows Defender Offline for Windows 8.1.

      Fred,

This reminded me of a day one problem I have, so no roll back available. The computer in question is running WIN7 Pro 32 bit. On the Change HomeGroup Settings, it says “This computer belongs to a HomeGroup” followed by a list of check boxes to share libraries, printers, etc. All are unchecked. I can check them and save, but when I go back to the page they are still unchecked, and access is denied from my other computers. The other two computers, also WIN7 Pro 32 bit, allow me to change and save these selections.

I haven’t found exactly this problem, but the most common solution to obscure HomeGroup problems I have found is to create a new Admin account, transfer the settings, and then delete the old account. There are detailed instructions on how to do this, but I am wondering if there is a fix besides brute force?

H Fred. I was surprised to read that Windows Defender Offline (WDO) won’t work with Windows 8.1. I use WDO on my Windows 8.1 laptop. It seems to work just fine. I installed WDO on a Flash drive using my Windows 7 desktop machine and then use the Flash drive to boot the Windows 8.1 laptop and run the scan.
