Mozilla have made available for testing Firefox 3.6 release candidate 1

This is pre-release software, if you use it you may encounter compatibility problems with some websites and add-ons. A release candidate is a version of the software that has the potential to become the final release version, ready to release unless serious bugs are found. If you do test the release candidate and find any bugs, you can report them to Mozilla using the mozilla.org feedback system, or if you have a specific and detailed bug report you can use Bugzilla, the Mozilla bug reporting system (you will need to register an account at bugzilla)

For those that use the IE Tab extension, it does not work with Firefox 3.6, and development of that add-on appears to have been discontinued. There is an alternative add-on that should work, Coral IE Tab.

Update: Mozilla has just released a second release candidate (same link as the first post). It is currently being pushed out to the beta testers and it fixes one bug found in the first release candidate.

A release date for Firefox 3.6 has not been announced yet, but at a recent meeting possible dates of January 19th or 26th were discussed. The bug that caused the second release candidate to be made may mean the first of those dates is no longer an option, but I expect Firefox 3.6 will be released this month.

So I d/l so my ? is can I install it as a separate FF browser, meaning can I keep both on one system, or do I have to overwrite (which I don’t want to do on this machine) in order to try it out? Is it possible to put it into a separate directory? Otherwise I’ll just put it on one of the XP machines.

You can choose a custom install and install it in a different folder, but if you want to have 2 totally separate versions you will need to create a new profile for Firefox 3.6 as well.

Firefox stores user data in a profile, and by default it will use the same profile even if you install 3.6 in a different folder. If you want to try doing that, here are a couple of knowledge base article that can help:

As Firefox 3.6 is likely to be released within a couple of weeks, you may want to wait for the release if you have never created or used multiple profiles before.

Thanks. Yes, I was aware of my Mozilla profile and that’s precisely why I posed the question. I will read those articles and take it from there. Thanks so much for your response. I remember uninstalling FF to the point of removing my profile so I could get a clean install so it should be ok….I do so want to get in on the testing version.

Added: I will go for creating a new profile and use the laptop alongside of the desktop to accomplish this

I accomplished it~!~!~! I am now running with my new persona haha~!~! This looks pretty neat I created not only a new profile but custom installed to a new folder as well. When FF opened I had the option of running either profile and I now have no bookmarks etc. to contend with. So we shall see what happens. This will be my barebones edition with the add-ons I wish to try out.

Thanks Tony. Actually that was quite simple to accomplish and I’m glad I took the plunge. My persona makes it look like the 4th of July!~~!~!~!

I’ve been using the Persona addon for some time and it makes for a nice look-n-feel break. Glad to see they’re incorporating it in the base.

I don’t see this as an Add-on, but it is part of 3.6 Release Candidate. I just added 4 of my fav add-ons tho and am liking the look/feel of this so far. Some of these personas are really tooo dark to see the Navigation bar etc. Weird.

So there must be a “create your own”?????
