After updating a Win10 22H2 VM with the May updates Firefox 126.0 began to exhibit high CPU usage even when idle (sitting at the home page).  Of the 9 Firefox processes that were running (default settings) one of them pegged the total CPU usage at 25%.

In a Win10 22H2 VM without the May updates Firefox 126.0 did not exhibit this behavior. Also, this behavior was not exhibited by Firefox 126.0 on actual hardware running Win10 22H2 without the May updates.

    Anyone else have similar experience?

More likely to be FF IMO. Try a different page?

      Hi EricB:

I am currently using Win 10 Pro v22H2 (Build 19045.4412 with May 2024 Patch Tuesday updates installed) and Firefox v126.0.0 and haven’t noticed any unusual CPU usage by Firefox – just the usual high RAM memory usage.  With 4 tabs open:

      Win-10-Pro-v22H2-Build-19045_4412-Task-Manager-FF-v126-Low-CPU-20-May-2024

Try using the built-in Firefox Task Manager (about:processes) as instructed in the Mozilla support article Task Manager – see whether tabs or extensions are slowing down Firefox and sort by the CPU column to see if a specific browser tab and/or process is hogging your CPU.

      Firefox-v126-Built-in-Task-Manager-About_Processes-20-May-2024

High CPU consumption by Firefox can often be traced back to a problematic browser extension.  If the Task Manager at about:processes can’t isolate the problem then disable all browser extensions at Tools | Add-ons and Themes | Extensions and restart Firefox to see if your CPU usage drops.

No browser extensions are being used.

The issue was resolved by a Firefox refresh (start with firefox -safe-mode and select refresh button).  I had to go back through the settings to reset my preferences but, all things considered, that was a minor inconvenience.
